I heard all of the comotion on my cel phone talking to a buddy who was RIGHT THERE. The kid wasn't cooperating with anyone. Period. He was being a total asshole to the library employees, which prompted them to call the police in the first place. My buddy called me BEFORE the police even showed up.

Asshole or not, there was no reason that I saw for the police to escalate the use of force on a nonviolent subject. One tase might have been justified to get him to cooperate, but from the video it sounded like he was tased 3-5 times. The taser causes intense pain and can induce temporary immobilization depending on how long it is applied. The taser came into use among police departments because it's a nonlethal weapon that doesn't cause lasting injury, unlike nightsticks and rubber bullets, and it's discriminatory, unlike pepper spray and tear gas. However some police departments took this to mean that the taser can be applied more frequently and (possibly) at a lower threshold than the aforementioned weapons. That is why it's very worrisome every time an incident like this occurs, it's more evidence of an increasingly brutal police force.

The cops in LA are NOTORIOUS for using excessive force. There were about 1-3 incidents like this caught on tape every year when I lived down there and they always caused a ruckus in the media, but apparently the LAPD culture still hasn't changed.

There are no paralles being drawn I stated plainly in that post that I felt he was justified to recieve the first one, but it was unjust to recieve each shock after that. The point I argue are the hardliners who have stated nothing more then "police are not gods" "police should not be allowed to do this and that" "police abuse their power all the time" that is really not true. We do not hear about the decent cops who just do their jobs and only hear about these ones. Blatantly trying to slander the policemen in general makes it hard for them to do their jobs. If you were being attacked would you want the cop to think twice about having to tase the guy to get him off you? Me either but that is what happens. The more things that we restrict on police officers the less tools they have to work with to protect people is all.
