How exactly does it work?

doesn't really tell me how to use it >_> just says how much quickening does etc. what buttons push etc? thats what i am asking. thanks

so when the name is grey, i just hold r2 till it turns white? then push button that shows up?

I was confused about it at first as well so I'll try to break it down noob style:

First off, you'll need to get 3 quickening squares on the license board for each of your main characters as soon as possible. It doesnt matter who unlocks what square, just as long as you get 3 for all 3 of your main characters. This will not only unlock that characters quickenings but it will triple your max MP!

Now, for every 1/3rd of your max mp that you currently have, you will have have 1 orange bar under your mp. That is a Mist Charge. Every character has a level 1, 2, and 3 quickening and you will expend a mist charge for every level of quickening you do. ie Pyroclasm is Vaan's lvl 3 quickening so you will need 3 mist charges (full mp) to use it.

Now, once you use a quickening, you will see the animation and in the bottom right corner of your screen you will see 3 lines of text: 1 for each of your characters followed by either a randoming quickening or 'mist charge' for each. If they have the mist charges to use that quickening, the text will be white (otherwise it will be darkened), and you just hit the corresponding button to add that quickening to the chain. As soon as you do, the time will stop until the next animation starts and you repeat the process over. If instead of a quickening it says 'Mist Charge' then it will replenish that characters current mist charges to 3 so that you can add on to the chain.

If all 3 lines are darkened, then hit R2 and it will reroll the quickenings. This however does not stop the clock so you have to react fast.

hmm the mist charge? i don't see that, whenever i do a quickening the book says my MP is spose to be replenished. why isn't it?
and the "Mist charge" i never seen it before?

Using a quickening attack uses your mp. A level 1 quick uses 1 mist charge, Lv2 uses2, and lv3 uses 3. 3 mist charges=all your max mp. "Mist Charge" can appear instead of a quickening on the slot machine and this'll refresh you one mist charge, this is how you get longer combos.

Book probably has a typo, doing quickenings, depending on the level of the quickening, depletes said MP.
Example:

Basch + Ashe + Vaan All have level 3 quickenings
Basch uses a level two
Ashe uses a level one
Vaan uses a level three

Vaan will have a total of 0 MP remaining because he used all three levels of the quickening.
Ashe will have double her max MP because she only used a level one.
Basch would have one more bar of MP (His total max) because he used a level two.

Im not a pro at explaining things but hopefully that should clear the MP replenish thing up.

yes its random, fairly common though, and it recharges all charges, not just 1.
