Yeah, you do keep the original. The copy the other person gets cannot be edited, only deleted.

There is really nothing special about trading Mii's or sharing Friend Codes (as of now) aside from the fact you can send messages to each other. Eventually when you play games with online capability, your Mii name will show up next to the character you play.

Nintendo.com has retocked their component cables for Wii, which adds a big difference to the picture, namely with Zelda.
If you have a Wii I would say you should go there and place your order.
