Super Mario on the PS3 already

Looks like the PS3 is already starting to be modded and expanded into a hackers paradise.

Sony plans on making it easier to install other OS's as well, meaning Linux will obviously be an easy fit on the console. I wonder if it'll be able to emulate xbox/GC games... Let's see if they cockblock it like they did with the PSP.

If it turns out to be a free (but illegal) "virtual console" that allows you to play any games up to xbox/GC then wow.. That's probably a better system seller then FFXIII.

lol, yeah i really don't see the point. The only reason it was nice with psp was because you could take it anywhere with you. I absolutely loved playing old NES/SNES games on my psp on the bus to work in the morning, but one of the newer games i bought required me to update and i've been cockblocked since i last picked it up.

Based on what though? Sony endorses the use of 3rd party OS's and the emulators are running on Linux. What exactly would they do to stop the emulation?

As for GC/xbox emulation, I'm sure it's possible with the PS3 hardware, just a question of whether or not someone would take up the task in my opinion.

When has Sony shown anything other than sheer contempt for their own userbase? I just have zero faith in them, even though I love their hardware, I fucking hate how they treat me as a customer.

As for the GC/xbox emulation, while someone may attempt it for braggng rights, I doubt it's worth anybody's 600 bucks to play on their TV games that can be played at better framerates, with support for Live and ultimately, for much less money with the bona fide hardware. 200 alone will buy both older consoles, leaving 400 for an impressive library of existing games.

Two major stumbling blocks for the near (and perhaps far) future:
    - There's currently no Linux API for the graphics hardware, is there? What about sound?
    - The X.org server provided at release isn't hardware accelerated, which means you can't take the easy way out and just write OpenGL code. No hardware accelerated window server means most mortals are doomed to writing 2D and 3D emulated Linux apps for the PS3. Otherwise, we'd probably see stuff like Quake 3 natively for the PS3 in the near future.

Just the fact that the PS3 has linux is worth buying, the possibilities are endless. In a few months the PS3 is gonna get modded inside out and will be nerd paradise.

As for the GC/XBOX360 emulation, I doubted since you need a program to do this, and Linux isn't compatible with shit so yeah... don't see that happening.

    Linux > windows.

It's a bonus... Just another thing that the PS3 could do. Just because PS3 can run Linux and possibly emulate games means it's the only thing the system can do? I guess that's fanboyism for ya... Go hug your 360 or Wii and leave unbiased discussions just that, unbiased.

I don't own a PS3 and wont for awhile, yet with this sort of potential how can anyone knock the system? I've heard Resistance is a great launch title and we all know that Sony has always had poor launch titles but some of the greatest games made in MGS and FF. Save the criticism for those games - if they don't meet expectations then dig on the system all you want.

We'll see though... If Sony somehow manages to make emulation impossible and severly gimps any "homebrew" linux things, then it takes the system down a notch. If they endorse such things (although we all know they can't endorse emulation ) then the system could take off in many other ways not including just games and movies, which is pretty cool I think.
