I think what he's saying is that he never MBs.
I think what he's saying is that he never MBs.
I can have that effect on people when i get sloppy, but it is an illusion, or maybe a figment of your imagination...Originally Posted by Rocl

Well you can go from +mp to conserve mp, and keep conserve mp's bonus the same as you can go from +mp to +dmg and get the dmg bonus.Originally Posted by Aurik
My point was, however, that you can not get mp bonus from conserve mp and then switch to +dmg, whereas you can get the mp bonus from +mp AND get the dmg bonus from +dmg (after the first cast).

You can't have both conserve MP from magnetic and better damage from static. Yes, that's this whole discussion.
i think hes arguing that you can go loq > dmg earring (like moldavite/novio) and get all bonuses. Cant go magnetic > dmg earring and get the conserve mp bonus.Originally Posted by aurik
Doesn't change the fact that cmp > +mp.Originally Posted by geno
Say if you never really ran into a problem managing MP, would magnetic still be more beneficial?
Yes because you rest less.Originally Posted by Bluedemon
more beneficial than what thoughOriginally Posted by Bluedemon

And what situation you're using it in, etc.
All FFXI gear unlike most other games is situational gear.
On many occasions I already don't need to rest at all during the course of a fight, or when I do rest, its at an appropriate time where magnetic wouldn't make a difference (ie. Sleep a wyrm > rest MP). Doing little things like wearing a black cloak while standing, waiting for the next MB or your turn to stun helps alot in ensuring you aren't running out of mp.
Where I can see it being beneficial is for soloing (less down time between battles), Manaburn parties (same reason), or events like Jormy where you'll be sleeping bombs for hours on end.
Both magnetic and static are situational. Which situation do I use more would be the deciding factor in which earring to obtain.
If you're not resting at ALL during a fight, then yea magnetic is not the earring for that situation. However if you're not resting, you're probably not nuking either...Originally Posted by Bluedemon
Or you just have Tarutaru MP and are in a LS that kills shit fast and in turn you always end the fight with MP to spare.
for HNM I don't see magnetic very helpful, for solo/exp I see it being very helpful, as your MP pretty much.
So here comes another question : are you nin or blm on HNM, if you are, do you MB alot. Should answer which is useful.
Me? I don't touch HNM ever, and on my blm i'm always soloing or in a manaburn party these days, so there's no question about it, my blm would never get use out of static, but will get alot of use from magnetic.
Other blms who try and shove opinions down others throats are silly.

Anyway, to answer his own question, OP should just nuke once in weskit, once in errant. That's 6m.atk vs 10int. He would get his own answer
A lot higher as in...? 10%...15%Originally Posted by Rumply
Or as in way less than 5%, cause not every nuke should be magic bursted, and 2 int against kirin is still a good dmg boost
Yeah I'm usually NIN at HNMs but if we have a BLM shortage I'll come as that. Its really one of the only few times I use the job. I've done all 3 kings (HQ and NQ) now on both jobs for me Static would be the better choice because of the situations my BLM plays in. I won't be picking either though since I'm still considering maybe even getting Ethereal for NIN and THF.
I definately see magnetic being more solo/manaburn oriented. Its probably pretty useful in long term fights like Jormy too where your sleeping bombs for hours on end.
Other earrings worth consideration that I don't believe have been mentioned would also be -emnity or elemental magic skill.
On puddings I always went with the 1MAB=2INT approximitely, but guess not D:
Also to the dude who said sorc. ring was useless, that is false, I can get it to work at 78%, and it's awesome >.>
Also, Tarus (unmerited) only have 7base INT more, not 10, and i've never been out damaged by a taru on puddings except the 2 in my LS, who have novio's as well <_<, my max T4 as a hume and pie+1 is 1761 atm w/o tonban or spirits lantern.
edit: only 1INT merit atm, and 5/5 lightning
Try nin/drk tanking before you choose. Ethereal really helps that.Originally Posted by Bluedemon
I love NIN/DRK, I've been using that for a while now. I have Eris+1 in both earring slots atm for that though. I'm not sure if I really wanna sacrafice the emnity for Ethereal.
does souleater count as damage taken, or health removed? eth gives MP back from souleater ?
Ethereal does not, to my knowledge. It's a cost, not a hit. Thing is you still take magic damage etc etc etc from most of the stuff you fight as a nin/DRK so the extra MP comes in handy (moreso on PLD/NIN but whatever).
