I noticed during the credits that they flash pretty quickly that decisions on who gets kicked off the show are made not only by the judges but also the producers.

So I'm willing to bet that if your individual sample ratings are high enough and its a close call, whoevers more popular w/ the audience stays on the show.

Carlos was a flat out dick, Marcel and that girl are a comic duo of amazing proportions. Carlos got the boot.

It's not whoever is more popular, it's who causes the most drama for the reality show. Case in point? Vincent from Project Runway. His designs were shit, his attitude was shit, he couldn't do half the challenges, everyone HATED him, yet he wasn't kicked off for a really long time because he added more drama than someone else, say Alison would have. Santino is another prime example. He caused so much shit, and alot of his dresses were terrible...but he stayed until the end because he was good, if not GREAT for TV. Producers want ratings, they don't care who is the best designer/chef.

Carlos didn't bring drama, and his food sucked, so he lost in both cases. Marcel, while his dishes are in the bottom from time to time, will probably stay longer because he is the better "TV character" if they follow the common Bravo-esque vote-off. Same with Betty and Frank.

Bingo this is why you never trust a "reality show" because in the end they all have producers, and producers are slimier than lawyers.

My favorite part of Top Chef so far has been the athletic (FAT) camp competition, where during the judging the one guy was like:

Judge:"Are you saying there was cheating involved in task?"
Carlos (?): "I'm not going to go there"
Crazy Bitch: "Well I sure will"

She was mad as hell rofl.

Otherwise, watching I just watch the show for Marcel. He's actually a pretty good Chef, and a complete asshole rebel to boot.

I didn't mean popular as in well liked though, but popular in the individual sample ratings per contestant. I don't think Vincent really sucked as a designer either, but he was way too much of a dick for me to root for.

He was a terrible designer as far as comfort. He had no consideration for his models and they couldn't walk in his outfits on several occasions.
