Smoking Bans

With the recent elections, a lot of states/cities adopted the Smoking Ban, for example here in all of Ohio it is now illegal to smoke in all restaurants, bars, public places and workplaces. Other states such as some Flordia cities have gone as far making it illegal to smoke anywhere aside from inside your house.

There are many positions on this subject, for the good and bad, but how do you feel about it?

Some people like it for obvious reasons, some people dont like it for the same, same goes with some bar business owners, imgine how much it will hurt their sales when the people they serve cant smoke? Here in Cincy, people are already planning to go over to Kentucky and smoke in the bars there. In stadiums people will be hard pressed to find a place to smoke, the cant smoke inside, and they cant smoke in the near perimeter either, so they better find a new habit.

Dispite the financial issues of some places, how do you feel about this?

Do you think its a step in the right direction for smoking in general and possibly drinking and other things in the future?

Or do you think this is an idiotic thing and just another ploy from the Gov trying to keep the man down?


I personally like these new laws for obvious reasons, I dont run into many smokers, but it is annoying when I do. I think another option could have been would be to raise the taxes on cigs to a very high price. Not only would that help keep smoking down a bit, but it would also help bring down other taxes.

Smelling cigarette smoke anywhere near where I'm eating or about to eat is disgusting. When I'm out at a bar drinking, it doesn't bother me so much; go figure.

As much as I hate ciggarette smoke and despise anyone smoking anywhere near me at any time, it would be nice if, for the business owners if nothing else, could put a place up near a large establishment or group of establishments where they could smoke if they wanted. If they don't though, I'll just say "Oh well, sucks to be you lawl." But then again, they could just smoke before or after they went there, so meh. Who cares if smokers want to go to another state just so they can smoke while eating? Let them, the hopelessly addicted, stinky whiners.

Where I'm front, having alcohol in visible public (even it being in the backseat of your car) is punishable.

I love how states are banning it from bars/work/resturaunts... basically inside businesses... but banning it from anywhere except your own home is too far. Well, at least it's cig's and not beer, if they try to ban that again it'll be hell.

I voted against it when it came up in my town (I don't smoke). I felt the business owner should be able to do what he or she wants regarding smoking. If a business owner wants to allow smoking in their facility, so be it, non-smokers are less likely to go there. If a business owner wants to ban smoking, smokers are less likely to go there.

Personally, I like being in non-smoking places and did frequent them more. However, if a business owner wants to allow smoking in their establishment for whatever reason, so be it. I have the choice not to go there, and I have the choice not to work there.

I don't smoke, but also voted against bans. Now, in my town, the only place you can smoke is in your home. I'm a firm believer it's either all or nothing. Let people smoke or make it illegal. Don't sit and collect billions in tax money and then ban it everywhere outside of your home.

Like someone else said, I really don't even see why it is still legal. Why do people even like to smoke anyways? It smells so nasty and I'm sure it probably tastes just as bad, and the other thing, it kills lots of people.

If people really wanted to go to a restaurant without smoking... some restaurant would decide to go non-smoking on its own and advertise it. Since there is such a huge demand for non-smoking this place would make a killing right?

I am not a big fan of the government doing stuff like this, I don't even see how they have the power to ban smoking on property owned by private citizens. No one forces you to go to IHOP..

This is something Toronto implimented a few years back. Its definately for the better. Nobody is saying people can't smoke but rather just go outside to do it. Its just enforcing that people show some courtesy to non smokers and their health. A non smoker shouldn't be limited to where he can go because a place is has a large base of smoking customers.

easiest way i can see is to make smoking and non smoking sections but not open air. as well as close off the cig market, sort of like a cut off date. example being; cigarette age in 2007 will be 19, then 2008 will be 20 and so on until noone is old enough to buy them.

this obviously doesnt stop it but it sets a cut off for the ban of smoking. government grants and support for quitting programs helps as well. plenty of people would try and quit if it cost even half of their usual smoking habit.

i really cant think of any other way of doing this without stepping on someones toes. the only people whos toes get stepped on in this instance are the ones who dont make the cut off, but technically they arent supposed to be smoking anyways so making it more difficult for them to aquire them is better.

rasing prices only means people will work harder and buy less other shit to compensate... i know ive been a broke smoker before lol (should i eat today or buy a pack of cigs... well cigs last 24+ hours so ill go with them)
