So you're saying if you drive a car you can't complain about someone smoking while you're trying to eat?

What happened to letting people do what they want? We're all going to die from some kind of cancer or disease anyway.
I think he means when you drive all your gas fills the room and chokes everyone else. Driving indoors is what all the cool kids do nowadays anyway.Originally Posted by SilverBreeze
they both emit cancer causing agents, one actually in more quantities than the other (the car). just because the cars are outside doesnt mean their exaust emissions dont go everywhere.
Edit: its ok though, remember at one point in time people looked at smoking the same way you look at driving
my point was if youre going to complain about something look at the whole picture and not just in your little "personal space"
Hmm, didn't know about people wanting to go to Kentucky. I need to get out more.Originally Posted by SephirothYuyX
I was just talking about the smoking ban with someone at lunch, cause the news mentioned it. My college has apparently always had a ban of smoking within 25 feet of the doorway, but it's never enforced, even after they did a recent push to promote it, and the fact they have signs around the doorways.
For me, I can't stand to be around smokers. It's part of the reason I don't do anything out. I'd rather not deal with smoke, cause it makes it difficult for me to breathe. I supported the ban. I'd also support a banning of cigarettes period.
In Ontario Canada, the laws are that if you are not allowed to smoke in restaurants. This means no smoking sections (cause Workers still have to go into them and that hurts their lungs) or even outside on patios if they're covered at all, including awnings.Originally Posted by Lordthom
Also no smoking in clubs here.
How about I carry around a suitcase full of plutonium with me wherever I go? I'm all for people "doing what they want", but not when it harms me for an unnecessary reason. It's just unnecessary for someone to smoke a ciggarette. Go do fucking heroin, nearly the same thing as nicotine and it doesn't involve me in any way or form (unless you rob me to score some moreOriginally Posted by Pyrena

There wasn't a law that said restaurants had to provide a smoking section in the first place and plenty of places were non-smoking before the ban. All the ban did was bankrupt all the local dennys/ihops/coffee shops.
(Disclaimer, I don't smoke.)
Cause god knows I shouldn't be concerned about my health, I know cars do the same thing as cigarettes, but I don't remember the last time I had problems breathing from someone driving a car in my face.Originally Posted by Xiona
When they give us an alternative to driving with something less pollutive and more safe, then I'm all for banning cars, but until then, you can't really compare cars to smoking when one is optional and the other is almost an essential part of everyday life.
Hey, if you want to carry around plutonium and I don't want to be around it, I'll go to a non-plutonium restaurant or I'll just deal with it and its consequences. I realize that someone is going to have a problem with something that I do, no matter what it is, which is why I'm more tolerant of people doing something I don't like.Originally Posted by Enkidu
I can't believe that people are still claiming that a ban would hurt restaurants and bars (as the OP says.) There are enough cities and states that have been smoke free for years to prove this completely wrong.
"Man, I have been going to Joe's Bar for 10 years but I'm going to drive 2 hours to a smoke friendly city's bar because my lolBud Light just isn't the same unless I'm sucking on a cancer stick at the same time." Yeah right.![]()
And for you guys that are advocating smoker's rights, what about non-smoker's rights? What about not being forced to smoke if you don't want to smoke? Give me a frickin break about smoker's rights. The ban isn't stopping you from smoking. It's just stopping you from forcing a group of people to smoke with you. Just be lucky you don't live in some cities like Davis, CA. Over there you can't smoke within 100 feet of a public building. Have fun standing in the middle of a parking lot while it's raining just so you can get your fix in.
Those against the ban are going to need to come up with better excuses than "OMG, my business will fail" or "it's my right to fill up a room full of people with my smoke." Both of those reasons fail.
I'm all for banning smoking in public places.
In places like restaurants, there are kids and babies. I don't care if there is a smoking section. When lots of people smoke in a restaurant, it gets around to the non-smoking side.
If people want to smoke, go for it. They know the repercussions of smoking, but don't bother other people with it.
Why should it be that way and not the other way around? If you want to smoke or want to carry around plutonium, then get the hell away from me. This is a democracy after all, isn't it? If the people vote for a ban, we're effectively saying "fuck off" to smokers, right? In banning smoking I'm "doing what I want" and in smoking you're "doing what you want", the happy medium is smoking away from me, not smoking next to me and saying "don't like it? then leave!".Originally Posted by Pyrena
The only problem is I don't recall the last time I ever hopped on a cigarette to get from Point A to Point B. Maybe some people use them for transportation, but I here they get shitty mileage.Originally Posted by Xiona
I found it ridiculous and disgusting about a news report, they showed a mother smoking in her car, with her child (younger than 5) in the backseat and she was complaining to the news reporter how her state is banning smoking in a car while a child is present. She tried to make her case that is her right to smoke, even if her small child is in the car...really, why are there so many stupid people having kids these days, and why are they allowed to keep them? I know personally I am not the best husband or father, but I will be damned if I am going to expose my six year old to smoke inhalation every fucking day while driving him around.
Note: I hate smoke, I never have smoked and never will, can't fucking breathe being around it, but I am not going to try to tell everyone not to smoke..but common sense about things is too much to ask from people![]()
Which is what we're doing if we go to a place that allows smoking. I want to sit at the bar with my beer and have my cigarette. I want to sit in a chair at a restaurant and smoke after my meal. By banning smoking in ALL restaurants and bars you are saying to me, "don't like it? then leave!".Originally Posted by Enkidu

No smoking at bars: GET THE FUCK OUT!!!!! All you pro-smoking ban faggots have really lost your fucking minds on this one. Obviously you cannot be responsible enough to make your own decisions, so you need the fucking government to hold your little douchebag hands. No one is forcing you to go to a bar. No one has ever come to your house, restrained you, and taken you to a bar against your will.
Don't like smokey bars? Heres a fucking tip retards.....DON'T FUCKING GO TO THEM!!!!! There are plenty of yuppie high class bars that aren't smokey, go to those. But oh no....you wanna go to the shitty redneck bar with cheap draft...but you dont like smoke. So you piss and fucking moan and make stupid ass commercials. Then you get it on the ballot, and spread even more fucking lies..and bam....you ruined another bar. Thanks alot you no common sense having motherfuckers.
Seriously....are you too fucking stupid to think for yourselves? Someone, please answer this. Why can't people make the decision to not go to a particular bar because its smokey? Are you really that retarded? I want to know...because it baffles me.
Just keep this in mind you no brain having dipshits.....Nazi Germany liked to ban shit too.
Fuck you all.
I need a smoke.
Like I said, democracy. If 10 people say "don't like it? then leave!" and 2 say "but I wanna do it!!Originally Posted by Pyrena
/emo", the 10 win. You can still do what you want in smoking, just not where I am or where I want to be. It's not saying that the smoker can't smoke, just that he/she can't smoke in public - where other people do not want him/her to smoke.
I'm mostly commenting on smokers who think they have some god given right to smoke (poster above me, for example). Currently, in cities/states without the ban, you have the priviledge to smoke either because 1) it hasn't been voted on or 2) because the majority agree with smoking in public. If it's voted on and found that the majority do not agree with it (and I'd assume this is the vast majority opinion), then you're shit out of luck. Don't complain, just smoke in your house away from me.
Wow, looks like a few people on here need to have the sand washed out of thier clit.
I don't mind non-smokers and consider myself a social smoker, while out at bars, social things the like. Keep them at home so in case I feel like one I can go outside and have one (we don't smoke in the house)
The thing about all of this is, theres nothing wrong with having divided smoking / nonsmoking as long as its just that divided or an area to smoke in. I don't mind going outside to smoke; nor not smoking around non-smokers. But what gets me is when in the designated area, you get non-smokers who seem to think that because it's outside and a walkway is provided that by walking through it they're in the right and make the exagerated coughing, the waving the air around thier noses.
I remember a time when the local diner we all went to which was horribly designed had a bathroom on the smoking side and one on the non smoking, so non smokers all the time would walk through the smoking side and would do that exagerated bullshit. Tables of smokers would light up so when they'd walk back we could blow smoke directly at them, immature yes, but same is the people that automatically scream OMG MY LUNGS IM IMPORTANT tree hugging politcally correct bullshit.
Dont come around to smokers in a smoking enviroment. Plain and simple, and people who say that banning smoking doesn't hurt revenue in local diners / ihops stuff like that I have a case in point.
In VA, we have no non-smoking ban, and I doubt they'd ever try one. We had a run of the mill diner place that was standing room only on weekends, line around the block to get in, smokers and nonsmokers the like, was rare to see a friday night and the place not packed. They decided to go non-smoking due to people that frequented it "crying", "whining", and bitching about having smokers in the same resturant. Well after 6 months they tried this banned smoking, have no gone completly out of buisness due to only non-smokers comming.
Another thing, smokers tip better ask anyone who's worked in food service in a smoking / non-smoking place, working smoking side always fared better income to the cheap non-smokers.
Interested that people think they can still get away with the 'it won't work' thoughts, considering Ireland has had no smoking in bars for a few years now.
Most bars have a heated area outside, with optional covers for when it rains - and to be honest, when I last visited, the bars were still packed - and while there were a lot of people outside (where I ended up most of the time due to being with smoking friends), it really wasn't different from a 'normal' British pub atmosphere, except the air didn't taste like crap and make you cough all of the time.
I, personally, found it extremely refreshing, and was definitely disappointed coming home to the smokey bars here.
