This outlet is in the dining room, and the GFCI that I "reset" every time it trips is on an outlet in the kitchen. So the two are connected somehow. I've got it working off of an extension cord into the living room right now, I'll probably roll with that until such time that I really need that living room outlet for something else.

What is the advantage of using a GFCI anyway? Is it cheaper?

To Suds, no I don't have any of that stuff as this is an apartment

GFCI's are required by the NATIONAL code in certain areas of residence. A GFCI is more expensive than a regular outlet but is there for peoples protection. GFCI's are built to trip if there is an imbalance between the ground and the neutral I.E. if you drop a blender into the kitchen sink it will see that there is a short and trip so that you don't get electrocuted. Being that your outlet is in the dining room and is wired off the load side of a GFCI in the kitchen(required GFCI in here) i now understand. In apartments you typical try to put in as few as possible circuits to keep costs down. So they wired your Dining room off your kitchen circuit to save the $20 worth of wire to to put in a separate circuit. IT's all about building as fast and as cheap as possible and well it probably wouldn't be that easy to get around that GFCI. Luckily the company i work for specializes in high end homes so we get to put in as many circuits as possible. All i can say is welcome to the wonderful world of apartment living.

My apartment staff called today to check on it and I told them that an electrician I know said that it may be possible to install a motor rated GFCI. They said they'd run it by the apartment manager and see what they could do. If it doesn't work out it doesn't work out, at least I'm up and running with the extension cord route for now.

I tried plugging in multiple items with ground connectors and all of those work (including a second PC power supply), the only thing that doesn't work was that one PC (even my laser printer worked, and that thing even trips one of my UPSes lol) so my uneducated guess is that your suggestion about the waves interferring with the GFCI was what is happening. Is the motor rated GFCI solution still viable?

Id say try another power supply in your PC.

If everything else in the world works (even other power supplies) im inclined to say there might be something going on with the one in your comp.

I thought about that, but 650W power supplies aren't exactly cheap The cheapest one I could find is $99, and I probably don't want to go with the cheapeset thing I can find anyway. Besides, it's on an almost brand new alienware, it's possible there's something wrong with the power supply, but it doesn't seem likely.

Yeah this solution should work. If you can get them to go for it. I have a hell of a time getting my apartment people to even fix the leaky toilet. Another thing is that if this outlet is not IN the kitchen or within 6 feet of a sink or wet bar it does not need to be GFCI protected. This being said it might be as simple as just feeding the power past the GFCI and not off the GFCI. If this is the only outlet down stream of the GFCI it is possible to just rewire the outlet and not have to change anything but i highly doubt that this is the situation. I suggest you get used to the extension cord cause for an APARTMENT it is probably the most cost effective fix to the problem. But now you know when you go to buy a house to watch out for this problem. And if your power supply is working off another outlet I would say that it is fine. Todays newer technology(your power supply) just makes some of yesterdays technology(20 year old GFCI design) a little difficult to work around.

    GL to you.
