First, remember that "officially" the events of CoP start when Lion throws herself into the works and makes the crystal lines go crazy, so when CoP Dynamis becomes available, Lion has already died. When Lion comes into contact with the Emptiness, it causes her (or whatever is left of her within the crystal) to begin having nightmares. These nightmares are especially powerful and result in the creation of a new space in Dynamis.
Diabolos is not happy about this, because someone has gone and created a new Dynamis without his knowledge or consent (and it has even crappier drop rates than he wanted!) He starts sending out shadows of himself to investigate and report back to him. However, the shadows don't come back, which worries him even more. He enlists you, the stupid-looking adventurer, to go investigate.
The trail leads to Dynamis-Tavnazia, where you find the shadows of Diabolos that have been subverted by Lion's Emptiness-fueled will. You defeat one (or more), helping to prevent this dreamworld from expanding even further and making Diabolos happy for the moment. However, Lion's nightmares are not going to stop any time soon, so you have to keep fighting Diabolos' shadows that will continue to be consumed by the Emptiness within Lion (like the ending of Dynamis-Xarcabard, this is just an explanation for why it continues to exist after you've won.)
This of course does not explain why Lion is a malicious bitch who won't give us relic accessories.
