Foreman's parents come to town because he hasn't seen his mom, who has alzheimer's, in 8 years. She gives him a photograph of his highschool graduation to remind him of how far he's come. Cue patient, a scam artist from the projects who immediately makes it clear that she thinks Foreman thinks he's better than her because he made it out. She had a lapse of brain function during a card game and was unable to think or make a decision, before she collapsed. Foreman thinks it's because of drugs, but her tox screen is clear, so they go to her apartment, find a crackpipe, and decide she has arsenic poisoning. Eventually she starts coughing up blood and her eyes turn yellow, meaning her liver is failing, which suggests it's either autoimmune or cancer. Deciding that the worst thing that could happen from full-body radiation to treat cancer is suppression of the immune system, which would solve the problem if it's autoimmune, House agrees that it's the best course of action.

After they do that, she develops hypersensitivity to touch, which means the problem was really an infection, but they missed it, and she's septic due to the radiation killing her immune system which was fighting the infection. She's going to die in less than 24 hours, nothing they can do. House tries to retrieve a sample of infected tissue to find out what the infection is (to satisfy his own curiousity), but Foreman forces him to wait until after she's dead. Foreman spends the woman's last hours in the room with her, trying to earn her forgiveness due to his belief that her death is his fault (he suggested the radiation), but she dies without forgiving him. House performs an autopsy, and finds that she died from a simple Staph infection that entered her body through a scratch caused by her bra hook. Episode ends with Foreman going to his mother for comfort, but she mistakes him for his father, and believes that Foreman is still a child.


Throughout the episode House manipulates Wilson's ex-wife to gain information about their relationship to try to sabotage his new one with Cuddy.

[Correction]

This was actually the kind of episode aimed at a much older audience than House typically caters to. Very little sexiness and House's jibes were extremely limited. Extremely mature themes of coming back home and finding nobody there, growing up to be far less than you had ever hoped, dealing with friends' ex-wives. The more you personally know about these things, the better this episode was.

In other words, the perfect antidote to yet another interminable episode of American Idol.

I've been worried that they'd never give us a good glance as to what informs the motivation of cameron, chase, and especially foreman. The last few 'foreman' episodes (the legionella one and the rabies one) were very much my favorites of the last two seasons.

They went into it a little more this time but we've known for a while that Foreman came from the projects and that his mother was forgetting him. As far as I know, they've never explained Cameron's backstory, and nothing really of Chase's except why he hates his father.

The only major thing I can remember about Cameron is that her husband died of cancer or something. She referenced it in one of the episodes.



I liked this episode. There was just enough "House being House" to keep my laughing, and at the same time we got some more development of the Foreman character.

Cameron married a guy who only had like 6 months to live due to cancer. I can't remember what her exact reasoning was (if she even gave it), but think she at least hinted part of it had to do with wanting him to be happy in his last months or something...

Nice episode. House's eyes seemed kinda colorful and glowy in this one, I just thought it was weird. Dammit, I don't want the season to end, 3 months without House is always torture.
