I'd be interested in examples of House doing something against a patients will after the diagnosis was known, simply so the patient would survive. I doubt it's every happened, it's highly out of character. He'll insult their beliefs and choices but he won't go around them unless it's before he's solved the case.

There is that time he told the girl's parents she was suicidal and that her sickness was caused because of a capsule filled with some bleach or detergent she took, even though she begged him not to tell her that.

Then there is that episode where he was about to terminate the fetus but Cuddy scared him off with the defibrillator when the mother went into cardiac arrest. I'm sure there is a bunch of situation similar to that.

The first that comes to mind is when he violated that one guy's DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order. If we're including just plain breaking the law (as opposed to going against their will directly), then he helped that Coma guy commit suicide so he could donate his heart (or something) to his son, who I believe was the real patient, and was solved already.

Most of the crazy shit he does is for treatment, not diagnosis. It's just that, if that treatment comes before the ~40 minute mark of the show, we the viewers know that he's still missing something. He doesn't. He generally thinks the case is solved by that point, and the crazy, illegal, often against-their-will medical procedures are meant to BE the treatment.

I've seen every episode, and he would def do what Masters did, no doubt about it.

If you think House wouldn't break rules to save the lives of patients, I have no idea what show you have been watching.
House normally has to respect for rules at all, but this is normally contained to the diagnosis. House consistently defends a person's right to be stupid with a life saving decision if he respects that the decision comes rationally AFTER A FINAL DIAGNOSIS.

There's two DNR violations that I remember. If the DNR case was about that medical researcher, the justification he used in that case to keep the guy alive in was that he could solve the case and it might be a diagnosis that didn't require dying. If it's about that old musician, House also didn't want to let go because he believed he could get a diagnosis that would solve all the reasons he wanted to die.

However after there is a final diagnosis from which a patient can make a complete assessment about whether or not they want treatment, House consistently respects that. I don't remember the specific episode, but it was a female patient who was refusing treatment and they have to call House in to try force the patient to take a procedure. Afterwards he says it's not his right and that the case is over. The team is bewildered and then Wilson says "He sees her as a person now, not just a file, and that's why he won't go against her wishes."

He will go in and yell at the person, but he doesn't override their fully informed consent. It's a running theme that he identifies with patients making informed consent decisions due to what happened with his leg. Last season finale he didn't want to let them amputate her leg because he respected her right to compromise her life over her leg far more than any other doctor.

In this case he didn't give a shit about what Masters was going to do, partially because he wanted to see if Masters was ready to bite the bullet if push came to shove and she had to compromise her beliefs to save lives. However I highly doubt House would have done it himself.

The thing with the fetus was him not respecting her wishes to sacrifice her life over something he didn't consider human or alive.

He was pretty much forcing her with his mental mindfucks but yeah he usually doesn't care about the patient's well-being in the end. He does get aggravated when they blatantly refuse treatment to suite their own selfish means and will force it upon them if given the chance though, especially patients he has started to get emotionally connected with.

Don't ask me to cite a specific instance but I'm sure he's forced treatment if the patient was being completely idiotic, especially when Cuddy/Wilson would get on his ass about it.

House has always respected the idea of "informed consent". He always believes the patients are retarded if they want to die or don't want treatment before they know exactly what is wrong because in his eyes, they aren't properly informed about their condition and thus are incapable of deciding their own fate.

There have been plenty of instances where a patient has said, after they know what's wrong, that they don't want something and House has gone along with it only to find out that they were wrong. At that point he intervenes "in the best interest of the patient" and makes his final diagnosis. There have only ever been a few cases where, after learning the final diagnosis, the patient still wanted to make what House thought to be a stupid choice. House still respected his patients' wishes because now they knew everything and could make what he determined to be a good decision.

You guys should pick up "House & Philosophy". It's a pretty solid book that gives you a lot of insight on both Philosophy and the character itself.

I avoided this thread all damn day because I didn't want to get spoilered until after I downloaded and watched the episode.

Fuck my fucking life. I hate this sporadic week off shenanigans.

not as good as some recent episodes but not bad, and I love cuddy's mom more and more each time she appears. she has the perfect mix of bitter cold-hearted bitch and sweet caring motherly figure.

...kinda makes me think she'd be a good pairing for house, if it weren't for the ick factor.

It looked like it, but I'm sure it'll be something deeper then he's on harder drugs.
