The hell would Cuddy not return for House? It's not like Edelstein's a hot commodity for anything else right now. Her Chemistry with Hugh Laurie is practically impossible with anyone else.

Article from page 176 (inferior settings) says:

"FOX has been looking to cut the license fee it pays producer Universal Media Studios for the series since its ratings have declined in the past couple seasons. According to Deadline, the two sides are finalizing a deal now that will bring the show back for one more season."

So yeah, only one more season. Cutting Cuddy probably wasn't the original plan for the plot, but if her contract is running out sooner than some of the other actors', they're saving money by not having her on the last season. Or something stupid like that.

Fox didn't cut her, she chose to leave the show instead of taking a pay cut.

Wow... I read a few days ago she was going to be back. Read Cuddy, Wilson and Foreman contracts were up, but all 3 would be back next season, but with few episodes to keep the shower cheaper, and next season is House's last season under contract... but guess wherever I read it, they were misinformed. So much for thinking they were getting back together...

Well, they said they were in negotiations with her and she said it was all but given that she would be back. Somewhere in there she decided that the pay cut was unacceptable and declined their offer. Omar Epps(Foreman) took a pay cut and I think RSL(Wilson) will be in a reduced number of episodes. Though how Wilson could be in the show any less than he was this year I don't know.
