I think most points systems have a "you have to be able to equip" clause.

    aside from that..

The only difference between a points system and a non point system is the loot distribution is objectively determined (Most points wins) or subjectively determined (Leaders decide).

Either system your "18 year old no job on 12 hours a day I don't always show up PLD because generally BLM is more usefull" still gets the ring.

Point or no Point, there's always conflict. But sometimes some people respect other folks enough and act fair. ;P

edit: just to be clear I'm not saying this because it's happened in my ls in the past either.
There comes a point when person B will end up getting the gear he wants once person A gets all of his gear. Person B needs to learn patience, or find a new linkshell if he doesn't like the rules.

EDIT: Also, this situation you describe isn't very likely. You're not taking into account prices of items. Person B would have to barely be logging on for Person A to constantly be cockblocking them, so if that's the case I believe Person B really doesn't deserve shit.

Thats when you have people set job priority for themselves. I have a guy in my LS who is a 75 MNK PLD and RNG. He's gotten almost everything that he could ever want for MNK from the LS, and now that he is focusing on gearing up PLD, he has to wait behind main job PLD for W legs, etc.

Rofl Wafik, you know by your logic, your favorite Asuran gimp should have everything over everybody since she is a no lifer...well among some of those reasons point systems are good but bad in that a horrible gimp can get some of the best items just because they have no life and play too goddamn much (see again, Wafik's "favorite player").

I think that project of yours is incredible. If you ever were to finish it I'd definately give it a shot for my LS. I see alot of potential in what it can do.

As for the divine choice vs point system debate. Point systems simply put quanititave measures behind the decisions made thus providing less internal drama. It also provides more incentive for members to attend events. I've run both a divine choice and point system LS now. The Point system is far superior in every aspect. Yes, it does have its flaws, but they are overcomeable. Guess what though, divine choice has its flaws too. Divine choice flaws are alot harder to deal with and over come. Point system is just harder to manage and organize.

As a leader I would much rather opt for a divine choice system because of how much easier it is to run. Since I believe in providing a fair playing atmosphere for all my members though, I put in the extra work to run a point system. Not once in my LS's lifetime have I heard complaints about gear going to someone who didn't deserve it, or officers playing favoritism towards certain members.

D Ring to White mage because he has the most points?
    How about a RNG ridill?
    Shadow mantle to a blm?

Points are not the end-all when it comes to ls decisions. Just because someone has the most points and can equip the item, does not necesseraly mean they should get it first.

For alot of the "big" items, leveling a job to 75 is trivial compared to getting the item. At this point most real endgame people have 3+ 75s, often many more, thinking about players in terms of their "main" job is outdated. It's time to stop thinking of people in terms of their job(s) and start thinking of them as a player.

Statements like "a rng gets a ridill" don't make any sense these days, that's not a ranger, thats john, you're on teamspeak with him right now. He's got 4 other 75s and you know he'll probably have war to 75 in a month now that he's got a ridill.

For people in established linkshells, you just don't think about people in terms of their jobs. You think of the player.

If you're in the kind of suck linkshell where you have to worry about players in terms of their "main" job, that's a problem with the quality of players in your linkshell.

I can't see any valid argument against a well done point system for real endgame linkshells.

OP: Can you think of some way of incorporating

    http://www.senobeya.com/ff/e/guildmember.cgi

into your system? The cgi is a huge memory waste when you have too many members, and the passwords (as well as email info) are saved as plain text. It would be awesome to see this with a mySQL backend.

It comes down to the fact that if you have someone with one main job, that will always come to events as PLD, you don't give W Legs to the RNG or whoever else; they would get the most use out of the item.

I don't think anyone who uses a point system has stated in this thread that it is the end all be all best way to decide how items should be distributed. In my experience, the people who are most active get the most items.

Any system can be made to work. The important thing about DKP or Leader Fiat or Open Lot is that the people using the system all are happy with it. I've seen them all work and seen them all fail. In general, DKP does seem less prone to drama. DKP eliminates false expectation. Everyone knows where they stand and if/when they're due for an item. There are no false hopes and dashed dreams to fertilize the drama field.

BTW, however you rig your system, I think the most important aspect is to reward most those people you want to retain the most. The reliable and skilled players are the ones that make the events possible. Keeping them happy will ensure you can always run your events. If they're the happy ones, any drama will sprout from marginals that can be quickly weeded from your garden and not be missed.

Point system isnt perfect, but it's pretty good overall. There are a few situations that can mess it up though.
An example I could think of, is:

A Person, a PLD, is an old time member (has been in the LS for 1 year).
B Person, a PLD as well, is fairly new (has been in the LS for 2-3 months).

A Person had an average attendance, but over time he has collected a lot of points.
B Person has a high attendance, missing few events, but still hasnt collected as much points as Person A.

A Person's attendance started declining in the past 2 months (school, work, whatever), barely collecting any more points in this period.
B Person's attendance, as stated before, is high. Bringing more to the table during the current events than his counterpart that has been slacking.

An item of interest (say, D Ring) for the two members drop. By the point system, A Person has the right to lot it because he collected more points over the course of a year than B person has over his 2-3 months. B Person is left out. Attendance of A Person doesnt increase and a very rare/useful item is basically lost in the limbo because of that.

There are more examples, I'm sure a few people can think of some, but my point is how the leaders/sackholders should keep an eye on certain details, specially when it comes to lotting certain pieces that cant be traded and are too difficult to obtain.
