Bah, I was hoping for something faster Last time we fought Jol, it was painfully long with 3blm +2melee as only dd (the fact we wiped at 10% after our tank dc didnt help too). I wanted to see if there was a faster strats

For us NIN/BRD and PLD/NINs work the best, although NIN/BRD is on a whole new level of generating hate.. The PLD/NINs are about to cover lot of the healing, and come to think of it maybe /RDM or /WHM would be better considering that.

Normally we have about 15 to 25 people max, always have some trouble with attendance.

Fastest kill was around 35 minutes though with I think 22 people, most of the damage coming from kraken DRKs, BLMs, and alternating SAM/THF for WS and a MNK for Chi.

How do you handle smns/aerns with 15?

We havn't popped with less than 25 iirc, but never had more than 30ish

With low numbers the main alliance ends up being really small. It always has at least a 6 member tank PT, and then from there a majority of the force goes into the out PT, with a few extras in the main ally to keep damage on it. Priorities ends up being something like tank PT stability > out PT stability > damage on JoL.

Out PT usually has 6-12 depending on how many come. With 6 it can get pretty rough but it's still doable, but with 8-12 there's almost no problems as long as everyone is there (as in not afking) and has RR up.

However many is needed to keep the out PT stable is kept in the out PT, and any extras are put in the main alliance to DD. More often than not the main alliance won't be full, and at some points it's less than two PTs worth. But, none of the setups are concrete so members from the main ally move back and forth between the out PT when needed.

So yeah, that's how we split it up. Exactly how many people go into the out PT and into main ally changes depending on attendance and how smoothly the summons are being delt with. Most of the time the out PT is fine with around 8, and the main ally is fine with around 5-7 extras on top of the tank PT.

In most cases though, while we may start with low numbers people always end up showing up over time.

Sorry for the necro. My LS is back to farming sea and we were discussing some strategies on JoL tanking. On the next day I was still thinking about it and after reading this thread I was wondering how BLU/BRD would fare for tanking. They can have Magic Defense trait, Stoneskin, Blink (Zephyr's Mantle), and enhance Magus's Roll effect. /BRD obviously for hate. However, I am not too sure about the resist/mdb/mdmg-% gear they can obtain, but other than that, their natural advantage sounds good to me. We haven't tried JoL yet though, but it's good to plan ahead of time nonetheless. Any ideas?

JoLs aga do only 1k dmg without any gear, PLDs/NIN work fine, i wouldn't actually even blink the single target magic so I could use my MP.
the utsusemi is only good for the initial hit the adds get off sometime(or WS for that matter, happened to me once on our first JoL, adds popped and WSd before they could load

i've always been kinda curious on how people fought JoL

I had a sorta crazy idea, but from what i've seen in the fight, most any job mage job can tank him.

I mean i tanked on blm for our first run for a good 10 min when all plds were down

All it takes is some MDB and -% gear + barspells and SS he was barely hurting me.

The only problem i could see is the adds raping, but techinally if you had mages tank plds can bring DD jobs like war and help adds go faster?

Hell, maybe a rdm/brd for kicks and giggles can just start out with a lot of murzurkas

    chainspell effects murzurka right?
16 blm all spread out just nukin as soon as the regen breaks

    could be fun D:

eh, may be a fun thing to try some day

pld/nin imo, primal drill can mess up a perfectly good day every now and then

So I've seen a lot of talk about tanking JoL without him actually hitting you. I've never fought him but plan on doing so within the next week or so. Can anyone describe how you get him into just casting mode?

Just have your tanks stand about 14.5-15.5 distance iirc (just outside the "hood"). JoL can't hit you with physical attacks and won't move to get close enough; instead he just casts.

Seashell tanks this with 2 PLD/Brds now. We have the tank party of PLD, PLD, COR, WHM, RDM dissolve from ally at the start, and just tank with songs outside the ally. We then have 18 spots in the MA for DDing JoL. Hasn't lead to claim or hate problems.

Haven't heard of that, seems like a great idea if you have the PLD/BRDs to do it and enough DDs to fill over 2 PTs. My LS probably wouldn't get the numbers for it in a million years since the add PT is already like 8-12 DDs, but I'm sure most others could.

RDM/BRD > PLD/BRD. Why has already been said previously in this thread. In my eyes, perfect tank pt would be:

    RDM/BRD, PLD/WHM, COR/WHM, BLU/WHM, WHM/SMN, BRD/WHM.

Fastcast, MDB, Phalanx, Stoneskin, RDM/BRD can tank while taking basically 0 damage apart from thunder mode. On the occasional time that RDM/BRD loses hate (happened once the entire fight I tanked as RDM), PLD/WHM will likely be next in line from curagaring the rest of the tank party. Still dont need to be in main alliance.
