If you dont close a skillchain, you get 1 point. It doesnt matter whether you solo, open a level 1 2 or 3 skillchain, unless you CLOSE a skillchain, you get 1 point. For closing, 2p for level1, 3 for 2, and 5 for 3.

I tested this with a friend while we were both breaking latents a long time back. I was unlocking club and he was unlocking Dissector, and I had a kclub in the offhand. So I opened for him, and soloed a WS in between, and kept count. When he unlocked his dissector (100 level 3 chains closed), I had done 50 WS solo, and 50 WS opening light. At that point we switched so I was opening light, and it took 40 more light chains to unlock my club.

We already know that closing level 3 gives 5 points, and soloing gives 1 point. The only possible value for opening a level 3 chain is 1pt.
