It makes a huge difference getting to events also. Imagine if your LS is short of WHMs for Fafnir a WHM who can run 12% faster just can get there sooner to help smooth things out. May not prevent a wipe, but getting there sooner is more likely to help.

In my opinion, usefulness order on them:

1.)WHM (since they can actually used in a realistic situation to benefit others)
2.)BLM (could help in a group situation....if you like pulling hate)
3.)SMN & MNK (would only be for town or solo use)

I've been the unlikely MVP of many many fights as WHM when things go very badly. There's 2 crises for a WHM - out of MP and gonna-die-to-hate. Gaiters won't help you on MP, but when you're targeted for death you can be a kiting machine.

ENM's comes to mind a lot, where I just kite and kite and kite and kite until people become unweakened. Most things can't outrun you. It's entirely situational but I've found quite a handful of times where me kiting literally saved the day.
I imagine there's little use in HNM due to monster speeds, small battle area or draw-in though. Aside from the people-getting-there-faster aspect.

And sneak/invis to get through an area? Pshaw! Eat my dust - I'm training.

Helps anyone, moreso WHM, on kited mobs.
Helps BLMs and SMNs in Solo. Getting away from a mob faster is always win.

Being 12% faster then almost everything is just pure and simple win.

There not a must item, but there really nice to have. Luxery item and one of the best in game. Once you get speed increase in gear, you will neer go back.

12% just plain owns sea. You can outrun every non NM mob in the Garden and Palace with just gaiters. You don't need to sleep, you don't need to stop and bind, you can just run and they will eventually deagro or you will hit a port and go away.

I like "repositioning" Yovra by doing that.

You can do that without gaiter, assuming your pc doesnt start lagging when there is 20mobs after you.

It's a lot more risky tho, I can definitely tell a difference when I went as WHM or MNK compared to my RDM. (I had gaiters, still no w legs.... fuck sky)

qft ; ; though i got my b.hide well in the downswing of things, i have never really had a ton of gil, so it was still painful, and left me with 250k after i got the hide at 1/2 price, and a free siren's hair

on topic: ever since i got crimson cuisses, i have loathed switching to other jobs because of the run speed.

Gaiters are godly for BLM. I use them the vast majority of the time, just swapping in Yigit right before a nuke goes off then swapping back out to gaiters. Sea NMs, any kited mob, solo and small parties, link control... nearly every single situaton BLM is in benefits greatly from gaiters. The only time they're not useful is for Fafhogg etc... fights where you stand still, which are few and far between. They're invaluable in Dynamis also, allowing you to outrun normal mobs and avoid many a rape. 2 or 3 BLMs with gaiters can kill Ix'mnk, Ix'drg, Ix'drk, Faith, Fortitude, KB, etc. They're nice for WHMs but not nearly as game breaking.

The difference between running the same speed as a mob and running slightly faster than the mob is huuuuge. They're useful for way more than running around town and training to Aery without taking any damage.

Someone in my LS once claimed he could solo virtually anything if they had gaiters. That statement and the subsequent ridiculing of said member (who, in the same conversation, attempted to compare himself to Avesta) has turned into a rather amusing recurring joke whenever someone asks, "Is X mob/NM/quest/whatever soloable?"

Of course it is--IF ONLY I HAD GAITERS!!!@$!%!

You can do it without elemental staves too, but why would you want to? Kiting is limited by the fact that if you make a single mistake that allows the mob to catch you, or even experience a single bit of lag, your done. Gaiters add a significant safety net to whatever you are doing, sans stationary fights.

You are right, they are a viable substitute for kiting skill. But gaiters and kiting skill are not mutually exclusive, you can have both and be better off again - flawless kiting, and gaiters for the inevitable times that you arent flawless.

Don't know if I could solo win Apollyon NW w/o Gaiters, but I seriously doubt it. As mentioned, combined with good kiting skills, that 12% speed increase can turn a BLM into an incredible soloer. The difficulty in duoing something as opposed to soloing it isn't even comparable; so to me 1 item being the difference in letting you solo an entire instance is pretty game breaking. For something like Kaiser, it's not just a matter of staying away from it, but Gaiters let you gain more distance quicker, reducing the time it takes before you're ready to get another spell off. When you're fighting something timed, this really helps. Personally, I consider them game-breaking to my BLM. I think a lot of other experienced BLMs lucky enough to have them feel the same way.

This is probably pretty obvious but they are also incredibly fun to dick around in and for training zones when you're too lazy to sneak.

News for you, any monster in this game can be killed with only AF equipped. I guess better gear is a substitute for skill on some level.

I agree with the statement that gear is somewhat a substitute for skill, but where does that leave you?

I guess you will argue gaiters provide no benefit to efficiency or dmg, but thats something subtle enough for people to notice on their own i suppose.

Very simply- you move faster than the monster does, the only way you're going to die is if he can tag you at range or otherwise impede that movement (draw in, etc.). Better than reducing the monster's runspeed in that your own runspeed boost can't be resisted by the monster.

A MMORPG fact of life since the first druid or shaman on EQ realized he could kite big-ass monsters in circles all day till they DoTed to death. Speed kills. Which is gaiters are very, very good things.

I would agree with most said here. Gaiters are great for getting around Sea to check ??? pop locations and stuffs. I am a blm and we still do Kirin the old fashioned way, cause were a blm heavy ls, and I can kite Kirin with the best of them on blm lol. It's also great for Assaults when you have to get around fast. AKA feed the damn prisoners.
