The composer of Oblivion's score is probably one of the most high-profile video game composers currently in the industry - there's a good article over at Bethesoft's website. However, I will agree that FFXII is a better RPG and had a better score that Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. I really liked Oblivion, but mostly because of all the aftermarket support the game has. Completely stock, out of the box, FFXII blows Oblivion out of the water. Oblivion as I've got it modified on my PC...I would say it's a head-to-head match because of the massive re replayability and open-ended nature of the game.

I should say that I grew up on PC, as well as pen-and-paper, RPGs and FFX was my first "real" japanese RPG. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, scope, and overall design of Oblivion mostly because it's one big sandbox I can play with any way I want. With the console RPGs that I've played over the last few years I've enjoyed them, but I feel more like I'm on some amusement park ride where I go through exactly what the designers wanted me to at exactly the right time and once I came to the end that was it. Sure I could ride it again and see some stuff I might have missed, but the fundamental experience would be pretty much the same. FFXII, for me, was a step in the right direction with the License Board system allowing you to craft your own characters any way you see fit as well as a combat system that was much closer to the Baldur's Gate/NWN/Planescape:Torment or tactical RTS games that I enjoy so much.

Anyways, I didn't even bother to watch the steaming pile of human failure that is the Spike VGA show. When in my books some of the best games of 2005 were Katamari Damacy and Shadow of the Colossus I doubt I'll find much 'enlightening' about seeing some B-list celebrity introduce "Game X" that made the most money in a given year. {yawn}

Oblivion is better a better game then FF12 in my book. And that says alot considering im currently playing ff12, and havent touched oblivion in months.
