Downloading anything now a days is common practice, I doubt theres anyone who thinks to themselves 'Oh god, if I click this link, there is a .00001% chance ill get caught'.

Even so, people usually get off when they get caught as long as its not kiddie porn os something; they just claim that they have the bought it originally and they have the right to make backups. Also, its not as bad as downloading and then selling them, its just for personal use.

That's rather interesting that he got hit like that. With the fact of how many thousands of hundred of thousands if not millions of people that use torrents. Even being with a small or remote ISP, I'm sure there are others that download using the torrents.

He probably blabbed his grill somewhere, but oh well his screwup. I use bittornado, but I also don't keep seeding once my ratio hits above 5. And have yet to get hit in any way, but then again who knows, some companies follow and adhere to case law more than others.

for the first time im actually happy to live in canada. Up here its not illegal and you cannot be sued or anything for downloading Music, movies etc. Because according to the law, Stealing is when you "take" something from someone, while downloading a file is just copying it. Case in point your not actually taking anything your just duplicating it.

Man, I'm sitting here thinking "God, these people are the most unlucky SOBs ever created... I've been doing it for years from many different sites and haven't got any sort of spank on the bum yet." Now I know it's because I live in Canada.

It's odd he got a personal letter, unless he makes a habit out of it. (as in, downloading a ton of bittorent/insert-program-here on a daily basis.)
