if your there to support the party with acids great go with xbow but there really is no need to if your xping in the mire. Using xbow and holy bolt your losing out on so much damage it's not even funny. I personally use gun because I also have cor leveled, so i have Marksmanship capped. please for the love of god put the o-bow in storage.

For Mire parties with 3 other melee + rdm + brd(usual merit PT setup these days...) I fire an acid bolt before the mob arrives at camp and if it doesnt stick by the second shot I wont bother. I also won't bother if it's an imp and someone has TP already. My gear looks like this:

Pln Body/Osode
Wyvern helm/Ohat
crimson/AF legs(working on pln legs)
Life belt(working on potent, will get RK+2 eventually)
2x sniper for TP/Merman + flame for WS

Suppa/Drone(no sea for brutal, genin/triumphs aren't cost-effective at all IMO)

As you can see my ranger is pretty "wal-mart" but for the amount of money I've spent on it(peanuts) I have a very effective setup that easily competes with a lot of merit jobs. I run a parser every merit good party and I can safely say that how well-geared you are takes a bit of a backseat to your playing style. I like to stand at around 3.5 and melee while firing and run back at 120~TP and nail slugs for 1.3k~ and hit them reliably. Like many others, I hate missing a slug so I couldn't justify going the balls-out STR builds that I see.

I don't understand why people have stopped meleeing with their ranger D: with all the acc traits and gear I still parse 80%+ melee acc eating meat and 90%+ racc without breaking a sweat. You build quicker TP and you can still walk back and nail slugs from a distance at the cost of maybe 5 points a shot if you stood back the entire time and fired(this is mostly directed toward staff RNG), whereas if you melee you get about 10tp an attack round + some extra damage. Notice my total absence of haste gear lol, and its because if I'm engaged, then I'm firing fulltime. Melee hits are incidental and may as well be free damage/TP.

I should probably note that my ranger is mostly my merit job and has seen very little HNM action(PLD main irl) so take what I say with a grain of salt if you're talking about high-end stuff but everything else is very relevant to meriting.

Depends on the area. If you're in the mire with a Rng pt(4xRng, Brd, Rdm/Whm) Mobs last all of about 20secs tops.
