I was pretty happy with the X-men movie a few years ago. Does that mean comic books don't count, or do I just have really low standards?

And of course most of the anime I like was originally manga, so that probably doesn't count either.

Well I mean like with respect to taking a novel or anything and trying to copy it verbatim to a movie. Ala Lord of the Rings, Eragon, Harry Potter, etc.. Comics are kinda different I suppose, unless they aim to follow the exact happenings of the comic frame by frame, I dunno if anyone ever tries to do that. And not to say I don't like any of these movies, they can just never follow the book as closely as everyone would like them to.

Would be cool if someone went and made a long, accurate Pern movie though. :/ Without butchering it..

I don't think Harry Potter was that bad but maybe it's because I watched the first movie before reading all the books.

I liked dragonheart, i thought it was decently written and had a good story. Reign of Fire I only liked the dragon designs, the plot i guess - woo humans suck now - thats kinda cool i guess, but the acting and lines destroyed it. I would have rather watched the same movie but replace the actors with cavemen/barbarians that only grunt and yell and dont talk. That would be a good movie.

I refuse to see Eragon. I honestly don't think i'd ever enjoy a movie with dragons in it unless i made it myself at this point. I just don't understand how time and time again you take something with such great potential, all the power and curiosity that comes with having dragons in a movie, and turn it into utter shit. Can noone think of anything good for a plot line where human beings are an inferior creature? Planet Of The Apes, are you the only one who came close? Alien, do we have to watch a fuckcunt of an actress that makes me vomit in my mouth just to get that type of plot? Isn't there another way? CANT SOMEONE COME TO THE RESCUE!

I agree, Sigourney Weaver is about as attractive as ErinTribal.

Well...honestly the movie was pretty bad, but my son did enjoy quite a bit (he is 6); he was excited so when my wife told him that there probably will be another movie (hopefully they get it right for the next one..if there is another) and he told me we will be first in line to watch it, lol. While the movie blew chunks compared to the book, in reality it will do ok in numbers due to kids wanting to watch it (for my son, it was the whole idea of dragons involved that got him excited after seeing a preview on tv, so I would think many other kids will want to watch it too)..I guess this is me realizing that growing up does suck and for me at least-I have to suck it up and go watch stupidly and horrendously made movies from awesome books since my kids likes them.

Most movies from books aren't anywhere near as good as the book, but wow Eragon brought that to a whole new level. Was one of my favorite books ever, and I don't understand how you can butcher it that badly. Most rushed movie I've ever seen, they didn't bother to develop any of the plot or characters, instead just changed half the story and then rushed through it all as fast as they could. I tried being optimistic throughout the whole movie, but there is no way you can read the book and like the movie without lying to yourself. Also did anyone else notice how crappy they did the dwarves/elves? Orik looked like a normal guy with a bigass beard, and Arya didn't seem to have any elven characteristics at all.

Only thing I did like was the casting of the actors, I thought who they picked for eragon and brom were pretty good, murtagh didn't look like I expected but still pretty good.

Man, I wish they'd make a movie series of either the Wheel of Time or Song of Ice and Fire series. Good movies, like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, not the trash that Eragon reportedly is.

On another note, I haven't read any Harry Potter books, but I like the movies enough to watch them all once as they come out. I haven't read Eragon, either. How's the book? Wasn't it written by a 15 year-old kid?

Yeah he was 15 when he wrote the first book, but they are still very good, at least in my opinion. Different from Wheel of time or Lord of the rings, but still really good.

Now that's impressive. I couldn't even write fanfiction at 15 without people making fun of it

Not impressive at all. I read quite a bit of fantasy stuff when I was 13-15 and I could easily have written a book just like this guy. The amount of stuff he ripped from other books is astounding, his vocabulary is severely limited, and overall it is generally a book a fantasy cliche's.
Although saying that, there's so much bullshit published in the fantasy genre that if it wasn't for his book being successful, he would completely blend in with everyone else and nobody would bat an eyelid.

Why does everyone always have to compare the book to the movie? Judge the movie for what it is on its own, not what it is in comparison to the book.

Yeah, I was gonna say that same thing in response to your statement, but you beat me to it. That seems like what a lot of stuff is these days. Even those Wheel of Time books, I think, got so old after a while, because it was like a soap opera with magic and swordfighting. A lot of stuff that comes out these days is just like a romance novel with a cheap fantasy theme strapped over it.

There was something I read a while ago though, first book in a triology, um... Fortress in the Eye of Time, was pretty good, and definitely a change of pace as far as the read goes.

Just curious, did you see the movie? Maybe difference in opinions, but I thought the movie alone sucked even when not compared with the book, it was really rushed to get under 90 minutes, and it didn't have time to really develop the plot or characters very much, at least that is how I felt.

Am I the only one who start laughing at the mention of DnD movie? That movie was so horrible it was worth seeing just for the laugh. It was seriously a traumatising experience for me.

Deragon didnt seem any better, and this topic seem to confirm it was indeed not much better.é

I sure as hell was satisfied with the LotR trilogy. In fact, I actually like it better than the books, even if they left out several of my favorite parts. The third and fourth harry potter movies were excellent (1 and 2 sucked because a)chris columbus sucks and b)they couldn't bear to remove stuff from the book). Hell, Mean Girls was based on a non-fiction book that I have no intentions of ever reading, but the movie itself is pretty damn good. Sure, I've been disappointed by several book to movie adaptations, but considering most movies made today are adaptations of some form of literary work...

I guess I'm a rarity in that I understand that there's no way possible to get every little bit of a book into a movie, but still...you shouldn't make sweeping claims considering how many movies based on books are actually better.

It was just a jaded, pessimistic generalization, because it seems like the first thing that comes off peoples' lips every time a book is made into a movie is "wow, they really butchered the book!" or "like omg, they left so much out." I enjoy them all the time, I appreciate them for the movies they are, never had a problem with Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. But people are generally not satisfied, and that's why I made that comment.

Man I wish that they really did stretch out the Eragon movie and give it space to cram in more content, but oh well, I still think it was alright. Not $40 alright, but I'll-torrent-that-shizzle alright.
