Maybe have to melee it down to 2-gears then manaburn it to death.
Cleared all the gears & killed both triples in 1-gear mode, no pop.

Anyone tried killing all the trolls or flans?
Is there only 2 on both sides combined, or is that on one side only? Next would be to try killing all of them in triple gear mode. I guess a huge timed volley of Blizzard IVs and Freeze IIs would be the best way to test this.
one triple gear on each side (east/west) in the middle of each room. Quite tricky to pull without aggroing or linking any other gears. some possible conditions or combination of conditions are
    1. clearing the gear room(s)
    2. killing the triple gears in 1-gear mode or 2-gear mode
    3. pulling the triple gears without any aggroing or linking

i doubt there it has anything to do with the trolls or flan since there isn't anything special about those areas, but it is unique that there is only 1 triple gears in each east/west room in the middle of a room full of gears and the gears don't drop much.

If anything casting magic activates it. I usually see them go all spikey once they start casting a spell. Not when they WS =/
sure meleeing only is not 100%

but since i came up with the spike theory, i have to give u the best way to making it spike from my own experience

if u guys found out a potential way to make it spike, sure and post here ^^

but to me, i feel its like breaking weapons, idk lol all these new toau have unique modes in many mobs (troll, mamool, lamia, imps etc all have 2 modes)

Also, Mad Bomber blew up at 2% again. For those who do low number Salvages, how do you kill Mad Bomber in the time allocated? We only got 3 JA's off the Sulfur Scorps and I gave them all to the MNKs. 3x HF + Asurans wasn't enough. I typically enter with 6-8 people and we do pretty well, just limits zerg power to some degree.
You're guaranteed 3 praecipitatio cells on the first floor, so that's enough for 1 healer and 2 BLMs to get unlocked. You're also guaranteed at least 3 opacus cells (as many as 9) from the same mobs. If you're taking 3 MNKs in with the intent to kill ramparts, best give them incus cells early to maximize damage vs. Mad Bomber later.

Store some TP on the local mobs before facing MB. Engage, Hundred Fists, unleash WS, and have BLMs nuke as hard as possible throughout the fight. If your third praecipitatio cell was given to a RDM, have the RDM nuke too. MNKs should use TP immediately as the bar fills.

It's closer to "forms". 2 of the unique things ToAU brought to us are:

Different forms (monsters change between different positions): Colibri, wamouracampa, flan (angry/happy), khimairas?

Weapon breaking: Mamool Ja, Trolls, Lamiae, Qutrubs imps, orobon, marids, hyrdas, gears?

So if the different colibri (open/closed beak) / wamouracampa (roach/pillbug) modes are triggered by something the player does, then I guess flan modes are triggered by something.

in sea those red dolphin things open and close their mouths... hpemdes?

the wamouracampas will just randomly switch their position without even being agroed so i dunno what it could mean. also marid's tusks can be broken and if they are broken its like a 100% drop on the tusk.

Gear mode changes at 50% (-1), 25% (-1), and the use of Restoral (+1). Gonna be hard to kill it in 3-gear mode.

According to FFXIclopedia: Whenever Archaic Gears use Artificial Gravity or Rail Cannon one of the gears falls off. Similar to when triple bombs use self destruct.

EDIT: Is it possible that it is spawned by killing Troll before/after their weapons break, or before/after the black puddings go "angry"?

FFXIclopedia is wrong. edit: where at wiki do you see that?

One thing I noticed, which may be nothing, is that once when taking the south path I cleared an entire room of Flans. After clearing the entire room, a new flan popped that wasn't there before. I know it wasn't a mistake either, because I distinctly saw the mob fade in from non-existance. I thought it was weird, but then I thought it was even weirder when it did not happen the next time.

    Hmm.

Can someone verify that the initial mob counts are correct?
There should be 34 on each side: 7 in each wing and 20? in the center. But I haven't personally counted, and Airforce reports only 10 in the main room. Perhaps the missing 10 mobs on each side is the key to the rampart?

Southwestern flan room (marked as 3 Flan) is where I specifically remember a Flan popping after clearing the room. Unfortunately, I don't remmeber if the room initially had 2 or 3.

1 "extra" Troll/Flan in each of the 3 Troll/Flan rooms?
2 "extra" Troll/Flan in each of the 4 Troll/Flan rooms?
4 "extra" Troll/Flan in the main room?
...or something of the like to make up 10 missing Trolls and 10 missing flan? Or maybe it's random in which room/side the extras spawn?
And then those extras spawn the rampart?

    Just a thought.

Raises all kind of questions though about how to get the extra flan to spawn.

    1) Is it random depending on which side you enter from? (Doubtful, since it happened to me once when taking SW, but didn't happen again during SW)

    2) Is it random depending on luck? (This would suck)

    3) Does it depend on whether or not you kill the initial flans in spike head mode?

    4) Can it happen with trolls also?

    5) Do the "hidden" flans have to all be killed for the rampart to pop? Or do they have to all be left alive? Or do they have to all be killed, but only while in spike head mode?

    6) Something else?

Wamoura will open/close based on the type of damage done to them. Uncurlled they have magic defense bonus and take close to full phsyical damage. Curled up they lose magic defense bonus and gain physical defense bonus. Any blm who's soloed wamoura can tell you that doing about 15% dmg to them will cause them to curl up and lose magic resistance. They will sometimes randomly uncurl during the process of nuking them down, but they will immediately curl back up even before being hit with another nuke because all they've taken so far is magic damage.

Based on this one could assume that hitting a curled wamoura with a heavy WS that does 10% or more damage would cause it to uncurl and switch vulnerability to physical damage instead of magic. Perhaps the flans work in similar fashion?

Actually, in my experience killing Wamouras, they tend to be curled into magic resist mode when I pull them, and then uncurl by the 2nd or 3rd nuke, and stay that way until they're dead. But maybe it's different for me because my spells hit for 750 at most as opposed to 1.4k nukes from a BLM.
