They'll exit spikes mode if a single WS/Nuke/Attack breaks a certain damage amount. Which is why the North/South flans exit spike mode so easily because a BLM Nuke can do like 4000 damage, but meleeing and WS damage won't get high enough numbers to make it turn back.
Euvhi. Ghrah change forms based on time. It's certainly possible that's how the flan modes work though. Wamouras also change their modes based on damage. Any high damage will cause them to curl into a ball and take reduced melee damage but full magic damage, and then just with time they'll uncurl on their own, but will instantly ball up again after any high damage.

Would it be safe to say that pure melee damage (no SCs, no nukes) will always work, and magic damage may be situationally usable?
Our first flan on Sunday exited Spike mode at 25% with only a THF, WAR, MNK, BLU, and NIN meleeing it. No WS's, no magic, nothing. We had to call off the MNK and BLU. I deequipped weapons on WAR, as did the THF and NIN and we meleed it until about 10% when the spikes came back. Therefore, I don't see meleeing as being fail-safe. Perhaps something gay like excessive criticals can detrigger spikes in a fashion like Hydra's heads.

The only time I've gotten this DR to pop was during one of our LBC runs with 14 people where we killed each flan in about 10 seconds 100% to 0.

Second floor rampart popped for us today. We did only melee, not even WS, to the north and south flan, got the finishing blow with magic. Both of those got spikes around 90% and kept them the whole time. Small group so it wasn't exactly quick. East and west flan were killed with WS and no nukes, all four died in spike mode.

After 100 chigoes and 100 bees and 40 minutes wasted inside ramparts yet again, we're all frustrated. Is SE truly so evil as to make these things completely random, with a possibility of no HQ summons? Or is there something we could be missing?

Considering that people have gotten 12 HQ summons when they do nothing but voke the rampart and kill stuff as fast as possible, it seems like you're not missing anything.

Okay, more on spikes. South flan kept popping back and forth between regular (pre-spikes) and squished-face (post-spikes) form. Couldn't figure out why, but it turned out that one of the MNKs had used Formless Strikes. He cancelled it and shortly thereafter it went into spikes mode and we killed.

North flan went into spikes mode like normal, but my AM2 to kill it was resisted, so it popped out of spikes mode at around 25%. About a second or two later the NIN voked it, and it went back to regular mode, and then after a bit more smacking it went into spikes, and we killed it. This is the second time I've seen provoke move a flan from squished-face form to regular form again. So, this is my conclusion from today and my earlier experiences, regarding the North and South flan:

Regular -> Spikes: Damage (possibly melee damage only) and/or Time
    Spikes -> Squished: Magic Damage
Squished -> Regular: Provoke (or some other condition that Provoke satisfies, such as a targetted job ability or a hate-spike perhaps?)

Has anyone ever tried Blu on LBC? Does headbutt stun it often?

And has it even been proven/disproven that Souleater dmg is nerfed on it?

I'm 90% certain Souleater damage is NOT nerfed on the bosses. Kraken DRK works great for the initial zerg attack.

Until the first Homing missile which would no doubt occur in about 5 seconds, dropping everyone's HP to like 100 lol.

Yeah that's why I'm afraid of it. Seems nice to help kill it faster if you use it when you start but if you use it at the end, HM would just destroy kraken/souleater.

Has anyone tried Blu headbutt? Also does LBC get more resistant to stun the more you do it? Ive landed regular stun as a BLM but if CS stun can land about 40% of the time it would be nice.

Yea that's exactly how it works. CS+Stun might be a good way to avoid Homing Missile spam while the DRKS are going.

On the other hand, you may wish to save your Kraken DRKs for the last 20%, and never use a single stun until 20% at which point you can send your DRKs in.

That was one of the options I was considering. However I'd probably be the only kraken drk, but a kraken drk can do around 10k or so dmg? If the mob has 50k HP it won't be too tough to push it down.

My other strat is for me to go on blu and just headbutt stun the living fuck out of it at 20%. But I dont know if it will get resistant to headbutt. Generally mobs that cant get stunned or are immune can be headbutted. Does headbutt or any stun WS have special rules in regards to mobs getting immune to that stun?

Would be interesting to find out but I don't want to lose a LBC run to find out. >.>

BLU is pretty much worth it for Disseverment poison alone. Pretty much any group can get to the boss with around 30 minutes on the clock. And the poison is 15 a tick I think? That'd be 9000 damage over 30 minutes.

Also I don't think it does Homing Missile until it gets under around 80%. At the very least, it doesn't shift positions until after then. So if the DRK stands on the side when they soul kraken, they won't trigger a Homing Missile. Don't expect 10k dmg though, 5k is more reasonable estimate since the AoEs are going to strip shadows, possibly paralyze, and LBC hits quite hard. And an AoE followed by a double attack could probably kill a DRK in a blink of an eye.

Well that's true, but that 10k is w/o HP drink. With your face being beaten in, using blood weapon and an HP drink 10k seems possible.

And Im afraid of Disseverment because I dont know how often the poison procs, and giving the mob 50tp seems kind of uhh.. >.>

If a RDM is Chainspell stunning, or a PLD is Invincibleing, or a NIN/BRD is going crazy or a RDM spamming Sleep II, Blind, Dispel, etc, I'm pretty sure it would hold hate off the DRKs.

Ah, I thought the poison proc was 100%, but I suppose it could be resisted. I don't have BLU leveled, so I wasn't sure how it worked. I thought if the spell didn't "fails to take effect" then the poison would land.

The only thing that worried me was the duration of the poison. If it was around a minute, then the TP wouldn't be such a big deal. Just time the casting so that it occurs slightly before it should have enough TP for a TP move anyhow. And at really low HP the LBC practically spams TP like Kirin, I really wouldn't worry about it at that point.

No chance for the PLD or the NIN. Only job there that might hold hate off the DRK would be RDM chain stunning. Best thing a PLD could do would be to cover, invincible probably wouldn't hold hate off the first couple attack rounds from the DRK. NIN/BRD sucks on this kind of thing because you won't have people in Mazurka range.

So how many stuns would get off? Having 4 or 5 means what? 10 seconds of time? If you completely zerg it at the end % that should be enough.

The boss also naturally resists stun. I'm talking blm with close-to-full drk skill with jupi staff just getting flat-out resisted kind of thing.

    This can probably fix that.
