one time we did the south flan.. he got spikes on him pretty early... then something happenened causing him to go out of spikes mode.. im pretty sure it was after a liquefication skillchain going off cause i was right up there watching him...

i thought we totally ruined our chances for the rampart... but at the last second, he put up spikes again... after killing the other 3, the rampart did pop

my theory is that a certain amount of burst melee damage puts them into spike mode, and a certain amount of burst magic damage takes them out

one time we had held the flan @ 1 % and he never went back into spikes mode, at that point its probably impossible because any high amount of damage will kill him before he can change modes (this was way back when people still werent sure about the pop conditions and still testing)

i agree though that if you just melee and let blms stun, you should get a rampart... with only 3 melees and like 2 blms meleeing, we were able to kill them all in like 7-8min~

Like I posted above, I've seen it happen twice, and both under the same circumstances:

Regular flan >> damage or time >> spikes flan >> magic damage >> squished-face flan >> Provoke (again this might not be enough, but it's what I saw happen both times) >> Regular flan >> damage or time >> spikes flan

    From Aircommand's site,

3rd floor rampart warp condition = Kill Archaic Gears in 3 gear mode w/o them using Restoral. (They didn't say which, maybe both or just 1 depending on where you entered from)

I figure this will need some form of WS/Magic zerg to do. Annoying.

(If people haven't figured this out yet, lazy to flip through 30 pages to check)

The JP text from the previous page means,

Entered (3rd floor) from the east (East as well on 2nd floor), reached the gears without killing any mobs, killed the Archaic gears in the east quickly and the rampart popped. (Possibly kill it before it uses restoral) The NM inside the rampart dropped Deimos Gauntlet - Ares 35 hands.

Popped 2nd floor and 4th floor RR during Full Moon for both. No HQ pops at all from either one which leads me to believe (if moon phase theory is correct):

Gate Widow: First Quarter Moon or Last Quarter Moon
Skirmish Pephredo: Waning Crescent or Waning Gibbous
Zebra Zachary: Full Moon or New Moon
Peryton: Waxing Crescent or Waxing Gibbous

My group went (w/o me) and got morrigan lvl 35 hands from Widow during Full Moon today so I believe in the "completely fluke" thing.

People have popped Gate Widow and Pephredo on the same run.

Moon, day, time, direction, and elemental resistance theories all fail, just like they do with crafting.

Divisor, how do you do that voodoo that you do so well?

It's nice to think that SE put in some means to predict or plan out when is best to go after certain creatures, but it's just not holding up. It's time and past time to face the fact that the rare pops are just that -- rare. You can have 0, you can have 1 that drops, you can have 5 that don't drop, and the only determination is whether or not the FFXI Drop Fairy likes you today.

Went saturday night, killed 3 Gate Widows, first dropped lvl 35 morrigan hands.

Tried the Skirmish Pephredo next but none popped...

Just curious, do you guys bring a THF when farming for the NMs?

You should bring a THF no matter what you are doing.

The randomness of the rampart NM's completely suck. Last farming run on Saturday we got 3 gate widows, and 1 lvl 35 morrigan hands.

Repeated same farming run last night for the spider and bee NM but this time none popped. Completely sucked.

Tried gate widow in the daytime, and the bee NM at night time.

Had a thf for both runs.

Yeah, we've managed to get Gate Widow's rampart on both our runs here... with 0 Gate Widows total.

Just killed both Triple Gears on the 3rd Floor without either even trying to use Restoral, no dice. So it's either "stay in 3-gear mode" or both.

Probably "die in 3-gear" mode then. Which means you have to spam it with TP under 20% and hope it uses restoral.

My group did Bhaflau for the first time in a long time last night. We went up with 9 people: mnk mnk pup, brd rdm rdm whm whm blm.

It actually proved to be exceptionally easy, especially after doing so many runs in Arrapago. We got to the boss with 54 minutes remaining, and most of us were completely unlocked. The only notable cell absence was that we didn't get any strength to drop, which is about a 10% per-punch penalty on monk.

One MNK accidentally subbed war, so I had to solo straight-tank LBC, and it was actually fairly manageable. With pro4, full equip minus ranged slot, and no other defense booster I was taking 150-250 per non-crit. Crits dealt 500+.

I had Shell5 during the fight and boy did it ever help. The AoEs were on the order of 200-300. Even despite his AoEs stripping shadows, I had little trouble keeping up shadows with 22% gear haste, haste spell, and a single march.

The big problem we ran into was him being totally gay with Homing Missile. After 70%, he starts turning to face the tank after every so often. As I was busy tanking, I couldn't time the interval between turns. Several times he turned and immediately used a TP move, even though I was running around his side. So we ate several homing missiles which caused him to eat our mages. Our BLM did not attempt to stun, perhaps under the impression that it is 100% immune; next time I'll ask him to stun anyway.

We wiped once at 43%. We had dots on but screwed up with layering them and he regenned to 63% before we got them back on. We held him for about 8 minutes this way, and by the time we re-engaged he was 61%.

Despite one of the RDMs terminally DC'd at 30%ish, we took him down under 10% before things went wonky again. As he gets lower, he double-attacks more frequently, and starts triple-attacking even. He interrupted me during an ichi with a triple-attack that I countered twice and took one hit. It also seems like his attack power increased because I took almost 400 damage from that single hit. I ended up dying, homing missiles started flying, and we went into zombie mode again. The culmination of this was him dying to DOT while not claimed, so we got shafted on drops.

That said, even at this point we had 15 minutes remaining, tons of time to recover even if we let him regen a tick. In the future, if we wipe at 1-2% we'll let him regen to 12% before reapplying dots.

we attempted the boss last night with 11, and tried using the "kite him around and pull hate" strategy, but it was too chaotic and only got him down to like 61% before wiping... we did get to him with plenty of time... according to my stopwatch we had like 50min left

i think our problem is no rdms and brds , and doubt we'll try to kite him again... when we straight tanked him we got it down to 16% but the tank wasnt moving fast enough away from his face and kept eatting homing missile

idk jus feels like we're the only group to have problems with this boss =/

At low HP there's pretty much no way you're going to be able to move fast enough to avoid Homing Missile completely. It turns more and uses TP more, so you pretty much just need to be lucky to avoid it. Just keep everyone in range of HM and out of range of everything else, and your tank should have no issue regaining hate.

I guess it works for some people, but if straight tanking is causing you trouble just do a kite/nuke strategy. It turns the fight into a complete joke, all you need is 2 BLM (could probably even do it with 1), and 2 or more people to share hate with that BLM (RDM/NIN, NIN, PLD/NIN, WAR/NIN all work fine). Last time we did this, nobody's HP went below white except when they got hit by Homing Missile.

We haven't either, but we have had much more success with kiting. We haven't gone for the win in a couple of weeks, but next time we are just doing one tank/kiter and everyone else DD and support.

Were all your BLMs /nin? How many BLMs did you have? As for no RDMs and BRDs, that's a -huge- setback. If someone needs to rest for MP, it completely breaks the whole shared hate thing. Either they're sitting there with 0 MP running for their lives while LBC is chasing them, or they're sitting there with 0 MP unable to pull hate off the person who LBC is chasing.
