Pretty sure the way most people choose to do this is just whittling it down and finding a way to deal with the charm phases as they come (randomly). Most group setups I've seen that do this involve a PLD and a good assortment of melee; typically not blm DD heavy.
The group that performed the RNG gank was my group. It was not retarded at the time as it was the first NA kill and it was done with 9 members - still the record as far as I know. Obviously in the sense of farming, it is 100% not viable due to exp loss, so I cannot imagine a group actually using that idea to farm LAC. Honestly I haven't even heard of any other kill using this idea. It was just the first kill so it kind of stuck in people's minds. It is certainly not a last resort; best group I've seen do this can do it with 11 very consistantly with a random assortment of melee and 2 PLDs.
Alot of JP groups do Salvage on Odin and I've seen a good number of shouts for killing this boss. It doesn't sound like those groups have too much trouble with it. I think the key is just being smart and making sure everyone knows to run during charm fests when it starts. It's not really all that deadly, especially when alot of times, Inertia stream will plant the charmed melee.
