I think I started my FFXI hiatus in.. Oct? and since then Ive been bored out of my mind as well.

I played PSU for a bit, played FFXII, Zelda, etc, but beat all of those under a months time. After that I started getting back in to anime and thats kept me occupied up until last week. The other day I rediscovered ROMs and have been playing random GBA games, while trying tro figure what anime to watch next.

I still find myself bored, and im burnt out on RPGs, way too much reading.

So I dunno.. play some action games, or start games, Advance Wars kills so time, watch a anime/tv series, nothing kills time like 26 episodes if you like the series, or watch an old tv show like CHiPs. Ive been watching Married with Children.

Ofcourse, the sure fire way would be to get a girl (I dont remember if you have one or not, and if your married or not, if so, have kids >.>) and tell her that you want to do everything with her, including shopping and taking her to get her hair done. Im sure that could kill the rest of your free time/life.

Im really curious as to what caused all of this. It's not just that this generation is more "babied", there really is something wrong. Is it really caused by all the TV and video games, like a lot of technophobes are claiming, or is it something far worse?

I've had the same feeling. For me its a burn out and a need to feel occupied at all times. I'm so used to being busy in RL between two jobs, full time school and a GF that when I hit downtime I get confused and bored.

Wow, I feel the same way as the OP. My friends always want me to go out drinking, but since I don't drink, I just think its boring and play games instead. >.> Life really is boring now, and going outside doesn't fix that.

edit: I do think I am starting to get ADD though, since I should be working right now and instead I post on forums all day or watch anime at my desk lol.

Do something you wouldn't normally do. You just have to be creative. If all you're doing is the same thing over and over, you'll burn out on it eventually, that's just life. So you have to kickstart your graymatter and figure out what else you can do with yourself.

Pointers (please don't reply to them directly going done this done this, because that's not what this is for. Use your brain.):

    1) Sexual experimentation

    2) Excercise, or a different kind of such thereof. Never really rode a bike? Try it out. Rollerblades, etc. Use your imagination.

    3) Do something insane. Go skydiving, base jumping, build a huge bottlerocket cluster and fire it like a mortar.

    4) Try doing different things with the activities you're already comfortable with. FFXI has sustained me for 3 years through 3 jobs. There's always something you haven't tried yet if you just go looking for it.

Edit 5) Do something creative. Write, draw, sculpt, take up an instrument, learn music theory and write some songs, etc.

    So on.

    Youre on the right track.

Though it's not TV and video games, it is partialy technologies fault. THink about it, everything is at a finger click away, and can get it in a second, anything you want is here and now. Fast food is the same way, its fast and we can get it fast.

Compared to 50 years ago, hell even 10 or 5 the world is moving at a faster pace, and because of that we demand things at a faster rate. Why focus on one thing when we can read, watch a movie, play a video game, listen to music, do homework or work all at the same time? If we dont like something, we can go do something else in a flash.

Its the new age ADD, its not a medical problem, its just something everyone has become used to. 10 years from now will defintaly be an interesting sight.

So, the result of producing technology to occupy ourselves is that it is becoming more difficult to occupy ourselves by any other "normal" means.

Thus, technology mandates new technology in order to keep the populous occupied.

I've thought of the problem before, generally the conclusion I come to is that people now lack purpose in life. Most people can grasp the big picture of the world, and realize their individual life doesn't matter. And honestly, most of the time it really doesn't. Of course the idea of that is a big problem. ;/
Kinda like voting, your vote will very rarily make a difference, but the idea that you actually went and voted matters.

"babied" generations can also cause lots of problems. The children don't create goals in life; they have everything they need easily. Wants can only keep you occupied so long, which I assume most of us are figuring out now.

But this is just my 2cents.

Lol, I never thought about it like that, it's funny but also true.

This is also true, though face it, how many people on this board are working just to live on a daily basis?

Most of the 'technological advanced' people come from families that were/are able to support their children (us) well. Most go to school maybe have a part time job and dont worry about anything else. They get bored quick. Others work just to work and make good money and get bored after 5pm.

My friend of almost 20 years comes from a family that kicked him out at 18 and hes had to work to live, he works, comes home, spends time with his woman, goes to bed and repeats every day. Needless to say he doesnt get bored, but he also has goals and works towards them. Dont get me wrong though, hes still a gamer and finds time to play.

I often think that a lof of the people in the world would be better off if they had to work to live, not only does it 'kill' time, but also educates you about life very fast.

In my opinion, goals is the kicker. You want to see those come true, and literally live to see them come true. Hence why when people complete their goals in life, they just sit around, and do nothing. At least, until something comes along.

Also, I'm reminded of Office Space a great deal here. o:

    Edit: Grammar

I have ADD and have since elementary school. One thing I saw once was pretty interesting, it was a new "theory" out on ADD. I bookmarked the page and this is from like 2ish years ago: http://www.thenorth.com/apblog4.nsf/Thr ... 710016F2C8

So what this means is that it's not so much a "disorder" like people generally refer to ADD, but actual biological "need for the hunt" to go out and do things. Our purpose was, genetically, to be the ones to gather food, which used to be quite a bit more of a task than it is today.

I know I fit that "hunter" role in a lot of ways, I also think I figure out video games faster than they advance, so it's hard to keep myself occupied.

Anyway, for you I would recommend taking up a instrument or start looking for a girl. Instruments are great outlets, but you gotta be patient at first because they can take a while to learn to play well enough to be an outlet.
Picking up an instrument was my out when I got super bored. Granted I suck at guitar, I love to play it and it fills the time perfectly when nothing else will do.

That and then there's my freecell addiction.

Wow, when I quit FFXI back in May I was extremely bored and couldn't figure out how to pass time.... so then I used the money I got from selling all the FFXI shit and bought a 360 and a Wii... thank god for those.

Also, you can probably pick up some pretty good PS2 RPGs to waste time if you haven't played them yet (Radiata Stories, Xenosagas, Kingdom Hearts, etc.)

well i think the main reason im bored i think is my hyperactivity and self-diagnosed a.d.d

when ever i goto read a book i get 2 pages in and start to skip paragraphs and skim until i eventually stop. when i read scientific american (my favorite magizine) i tend to force myself to continue reading or it takes me a few tries to get thru a article.

true story, i was just typing this and apparently i forgot i was writing this. i started watching tv then and continued eatting breakfast lol.

the only upside to this is that i notice the smallest details in a fast and busy setting. i guess its because im pretty much always scanning the area.
Well, if you ever want to get it under control then I suggest you go see a doctor, specifically a mental health specialist. I could be the stuff you suspect or other stuff. I myself went to the doc and figured out I had depression. A lot of these disorders are biological so they can be controlled with meds. It's like getting flintstone vitamins for your brain cuz your body isn't producing what u need to keep sane.
