Does your fat PS2 work at least? I think FFXI raped mine while I wasn't looking, because the only thing it can actually play is the HDD.Originally Posted by Lbelle

FFXI broke my PS2 til I took a few cans of compressed air to it. Though I did open it up and spray everything, including the disc tray, even though its not in operation during FFXI play it can still collect dust coming through the fan and make things heat up more. I've heard people that have gone through a few PS2s due to FFXI, they just bought new ones and put their HDDs in the new ones. w
lol man, my fat PS2 is probably responsible for like $100 worth of those compressed air cans.Originally Posted by xerodok
At some point it just doesn't matter if you clean it every day (and cleaning those POSs is hard too, because there are a million screws to take apart each time), it will just refuse to work.
Slim PS2 was an easy solution for me. (Way easier than spending too much money on compressed air, AND the time it took to clean the damn thing every time.)
I prefer my fat PS2 so i can put a nice hardrive inside for good old american HDLoading :D
I always played FFXI on my PC when I played it, so not sure if my fat PS2 would have broken if I played FFXI on it. However, due to all the dust and it being pretty old it probably would have broken.
My first fat PS2 died with disc read error (was an original launch one)...still have the 2nd one. I've had it on for over a month now, which probably isn't good. I don't even play it, just leave it on and forget it's on.
I like my slim .jp ps2. I previously used two launch-era ps2s, one from japan for imports and an NA version and managing the two was a pain. Now the slim .jp one just sits on top of my fatty NA version and I still have space in my entertainment center for dvds, controllers, the power strip, etc. It's a marvel.
Did you start your ps3 up in the menu mode and select it as a ps2 game and not a ps3 game? It looks the same for PS2 and PS3 games to me.. and i tried the same games youtube.com did. The only big thing you have to do is run PS1 & PS2 games at 480i which can be selected in the start up menu. If you run a PS2 or PS1 game as a 1080i then yes it looks like shit because the ps3 distorts the image giving it a choppy effect.Originally Posted by Vinen
In other words.. you are saying that PS2 and PS1 games should be run in 480i on PS3 since thats what they were made to be played in? And PS2 games which can be played in 480p (Progressive Scan) can be set to that in the menu? And they should look as they do on a normal PS2?
Can anyone else confirm this as well? If this is the case it should resolve that issue altogether.
When we got our PS3 at launch we were stumped at why FF12 looked as bad as it did on our HDTV running through the PS3. We put it back in the PS2 hooked up to the same TV, cables etc and the game was fine. On the PS3 though, it just looks like someone made lines through the game with jaggies.
Anyways, here is a link to the official Sony forums showing what many believe to be the problem and why its happening etc.

Hope this helps. We are holding on to hope that this can be fixed via firmware. A lot of people are saying most don't complain about it because it's more apparent when you play on larger HDTV sets, versus standard TVs and that is sadly what the average gamer has still. I would like to think that even if you were playing on a standard def TV that you would at least notice this. We sure did when we hooked it up to an older TV to check it out.
Oh shit, is this true? I'd love to be able to play on my slim ps2--much easier to 2-box since I don't have two monitors.Originally Posted by shihei
Fuck buying the system and waiting for a firmware though, I'll purchase my PS3 when they get their act together and start acting like a real next-gen console.
The 360 has no problems playing Halo, for instance....
If they ever animate Get Your War On I'd want that guy to do most of the voices.Originally Posted by Zigma

You sadly can't do that. After my fourth old style PS2 died (Too many hours of FFXI put them all to their graves) I looked into getting a slim style and an external HDD. The only HDD you can get to work is the old Japanese one released by Sony. (Which they don't sell anymore)Originally Posted by Res
I just ended up buying FFXI for the 360, glad I did anyways, since it looks a million times better than the PS2 version anyways.
Your PS2 actually died from FFXI? Or it just refused to do anything BUT play FFXI?![]()
Mine just refused to play any CDs, and would only work if I disconnected the HDD, but even then it would take about 20 restarts for the damn thing to finally register the game I put in.... so I got a slim PS2.
You're right about that Exoduso, we wish now we would have waited too. Ashamed to say it but the only thing we were going to play on the PS3 was FF12, and even now we just finished that on our old PS2 instead since the graphics were so terrible on the PS3. Ever since, it's just sat there. Our Wii and 360 get their fare share of workouts though.Originally Posted by Exoduso
Yup, I've actually been using the 360 way more than the Wii ever since I picked up the HDTV just because I've been spoiled by the graphics.
But yeah, now that the component cables finally arrived it's actually tolerable to play the Wii again.
I don't see a reason to buy the PS3 until Tekken6/MGS4's release in July though.
EDIT: Hell, even VF5 isn't an exclusive PS3 title anyways... it'll be released on the 360 later on this year.
Well, lol first PS2 Disc Drive wouldn't work anymore or read discs. So when Chains of Promathia came out, we found a new PS2 still in the box. Moved over the HDD and all was good. That one lasted a long time until for some reason the AV cables on the back started to go out.Originally Posted by Exoduso
The third one was a used old style and worked when we got it but the drive eventually died and then one day the system just froze after a marathon session of Fafnir, Adamantoise, and Behemoth windows all back to back. After powering it off it never booted back on.
Fourth and final system lasted until Treasures came out and was a used one as well. The disc drive wouldn't read discs and finally it wouldn't recognize the HDD installed. /sigh At least the 360 is going along well. (knock on wood)
LOL I had that same problem with ToAU's CD when it came out... my damn PS2 wouldn't play it, I had to take the HDD and the game and go to a friend's PS2 and do the installation there... it was horrible.
