They call this Wake-Initiated Lucid Dream. What I typically do is let images go through my mind while keeping my body relaxed. The images appear out of no where (though they typically relate to things I've recently seen in the waking life) and seem to disappear into a dark vortex of sorts. Often times I get sleep paralysis, a feeling that still manages to give me a sense of dread (imagine being in a coma but being fully aware of your surroundings and not being able to do anything about it) accompanied by both auditory and visual hallucinations and tactile sensations (being touched by someone /cry). Eventually I enter my dream state where I am free to conduct experiments/scenarios of my liking.
It's fascinating stuff and I'm always trying to come up with new experiments to try to see the results of them in a dream.
