    Kicking the habit

So I have not had a smoke in 5 days. It is hard because smoking was something to do when I was bored. I went out drinking on sunday and I almost died from wanting a smoke in my hand while drinking. My smoking hand just felt... naked. 5 days though. My coffee intake has increased absurdly, but that is healthier than smoking. Any tips?

When you want to smoke, cut yourself instead. Take pictures.

I have no constructive advice, but I wish you luck.

    sounds constructive enough.

These personal problems/Emo threads remind me of JerseyProphet in some way.

chew gum, read, build models, draw. I dunno, I've heard from a few other people that these things can help. But I guess it could just differ from person to person.

LOL. gum makes me really hungry. I often smoked while reading, models are not my thing, but if it's anything like me putting a pc together... I took smoke breaks like ever 5 minutes... I don't think you guys understand. Drawing... I used to do... sounds like the best idea so far. I'll put writing up there too.

jolly ranchers, gum, and buy the patch if you think about grabbing cigs a lot... having the nicotine in your system helps you handle breaking the mental habit with cigs

i stopped 11/16/06 and i havent even wanted a cig, i used the patch for 6 weeks (2weeks per step)

I'm going to be starting chantix tommorow myself. I've heard some good success stories with it but it does kinda play with your mind.

isnt that an antidepresant? it might help but i think weaning yourself off the habit then weaning off the nicotine addiction might work best. creating new activities to replace the smoking ones are key, then once you dont physically urge for the cig you can start to remove the nicotine slowly.

after meals i dont crave cigs anymore, now i pop a jolly rancher or some gum. but as long as your method works then im glad to be honest. if it doesnt then you can try someone elses method until you find one that works. sometimes it takes a few tries before you kick the habit, but its totally worth it

Think of the benefits of you not smoking and you wont. If you continue to smoke chances are greater then not that you will be on your death bed drowning in your own bodily juices regretting that you didn't stop while you had the chance.

I used candy gum and chewed on the end of toothpicks and I was able to quit :]

Always carry a pen in your hand. As much as smoking is a chemical addiction, its also a physical one. I laughed at it myself, but it honestly worked for me. I quit smoking more than a year ago now.

I was going to suggest chew gum since that is what alot of people have told me they do to quit smoking, but you said that doesn't work for you. I don't smoke and so I've never had to try to quit...but I'll atleast wish you luck! So good luck~ keep at it.

    I quit on Christmas eve.

I have had absolutely no urge to smoke in the past week. I find myself reaching for one every now and then out of habit, but I haven't thought "I really want a cigarette now."

The hard part is what quitting is doing to my body. My throat is raw, my lungs feel heavy with a sensation I can't really describe, my head hurts, my ears hurt, my jaw hurts. I'm caughing more than I ever did smoking.

I actually went to the clinic the other day because I thought I had Bronchitis, Strep Throat, or some other winter bug. I talked to the doctor for quite awhile about my situation. It seems withdrawal symptoms vary widely from person to person and I'm getting the shit end of the stick heh.

Ironically, getting rid of the throat and lung pain and discomfort is what tempts me the most to smoke again.

Chewing gum, the patch, being hypnotized, etc..... All that shit doesn't work. You just need to want it. The way I saw it when I quit was, as stubborn as you have to be to continue smoking, fully knowing the health risks and the costs, you need to be that stubborn to quit. Just don't smoke. Anytime you rely on a crutch (patches, gum, etc.), you are never fully breaking the habbit. You lived once without it. You don't need it.

Changing the habit is the hardest thing with quitting.

For me quitting is hard because I mentally use smoking as a reward. I think i'll do the dishes, then i'll go have a smoke. Finding something else (besides food) to use a reward is hard!

Just remember to stay quit so you don't have to go through that crappy time where your body is fixing itself.

I've quit several times and haven't managed to stay quit. I get around it after 6 months and think I can have just one..... then i'm right back to it.

Don't ever have just one! Once an addict, always and addict!
