No matter where a Meteor hits earth, it'd hit so hard and so fast that the results would be supernatural. The meteor would reach purple hot temperatures (even hotter than white/blue hot) and will incinerate anything within a like 300-600 mile radius of it as it crashes to earth. And despite the movies, the meteor would be moving so fast that it'd go from viewable to hitting earth within seconds. There'd be no staring up as it came for us.

The resulting blast would kick up enough smoke and dust to cloud out the entire earth, and the resulting shockwave would result in tsunamis all over the world. A few minutes after the impact we'd experience 400-500 mph winds simply because of the magnitude of the hit and everything on earth would likely be in chaos by then.

Also there's the issue of the meteor burning it's way into the earths crust and then bursting into millions of smaller asteroids which would then rain down on the earth.

Were they referring to an asteroid the same size as the one in Armageddon? I remember watching something on TV about this kinda stuff a long time ago, they said asteroids the size of football stadiums and shit like that pass Earth all the time, but the destruction they'd cause wouldnt be completely devastating...maybe enough to like blow up a town and whatnot. The bigger ones, i dunno, around the size of small towns could wipe out an entire shoreline of the US and destroy a couple of the states around there. The ones that are sizes of states and shit, those are the meteors that'll cause mass destruction on a global scale, but i dunno if it would turn the world into utter ruin....it would eradicate life on a few big continents and do a nice little number on the rest of the world, and cause earthquakes you cant even imagine. In the end, i think life could go on if an asteroid the size of the one in Armageddon came down and pwned us...i just hope it'd take out China first.

I also read on NASA's site or somewhere that makes astronomics a pretty big deal that there's an asteroid of this magnetude (not the one mentioned above) that permanantly flies around the solar system and orbits the planets, misses us every time it comes near us...and they mapped out the path so that sometime in the future, it will hit us if the orbits are all correct, so they plan on diverting it's course by throwing shit at it someday.

Basically in the entire life of the earth there's likely to be one meteor that could potentially wipe out all life on earth, and that basically already happened when a mars sized protoplanet hit the earth ~4.5 bil years ago forming the moon.

On the order of a few hundred years there's usually a pretty devestating meteor like one that wiped out thousands of square miles of forest in siberia around 1900. Something that could really fuck up humans is on the orders of 10s of thousands of years, and that wouldn't be life ending by any stretch of the imagination. Something that could completely wipe out human life would be on the order of hundreds of millions of years. The only real evidence for any meteor causing massive damage is the death of the dinosaurs and I believe that meteor was ~10 KM wide. The other mass extinctions on records can generally be attributed to supervolcanoes or other less understood phenomena.

And people need to remember that the shit that would hit earth is coming from the solar system, not just huge fucking rocks hurtling through the galaxy. Astronomers have pretty damn accurate predictions for where the vast majority of asteroids in the asteroid belt will be in the next 50 years... the ones we really have to worry about are objects in the oort cloud and kuiper belt which are really hard to see and we can't map very well. But ya... earth isn't gonna get wiped out any time soon.

Entirely impossible. A planet can not be as big as a sun without becoming one... well, being made as one in the first place. Also, if something is coming to kill us, we would know. We can pretty much see thousands/millions/billions of years into the past just by looking far enough.

Scientists are 99.7 percent certain it will pass at a distance of 18,800 to 20,800 miles.

I think Bruce Willis will not be needed, but it'll make a pretty show.

I read in Popular Mechanics that the asteroid isn't that big. It'd hit with the force of several thousand Hiroshima bombs, it said, but it would really only be enough to wipe out a large city or cause one HELL of a series of tidal waves. And the article mentioned that its calculated path has its possible area of landing in like Russia or South America. Screw those guys.

The asteroid isn't that large. The asteroid most commonly associated with kicking up so much dust and blocking out the sun is the one that killed the dinosaurs, an asteroid that was roughly six miles wide. This asteroid is slightly over 800 feet wide, it is much, much smaller. Not to mention that the most likely place it will hit is in the middle of the ocean.

The asteroid isn't that large. The asteroid most commonly associated with kicking up so much dust and blocking out the sun is the one that killed the dinosaurs, an asteroid that was roughly six miles wide. This asteroid is slightly over 800 feet wide, it is much, much smaller. Not to mention that the most likely place it will hit is in the middle of the ocean.

and hitting the ocean can be just as bad >.> with nothing to stop a wave of the magnitude that it would cause, itd be owning alot of the coastal areas ^^
