The Shinra (or whatever there name is) do not have a backstory either, to be fair. How did Kirin and his buddies end up in Ru'Aun Gardens? Why is Kirin sealed by the other gods? The only clue we have is that explorer's writing written in blood that talks about their treasure. There are so many mysteries of this game that go unsolved. The last big mystery that was really explored back in the Tribune was the how the Hydra and their relic armor ended up in dynamis.

Which makes me sad, as I actually liked reading the stories. The translations of the JP Tribunes of the avatar stories (like where Shiva, Ifrit, etc. come from) are good stuff. A translation of those stories can be found in FFXIClopedia's avatar listings, by the by.
