I actually have an explanation outside of Kubo being Kubo. Remember that in the FKT arc they said a person's mask only stayed for long periods when there was a small difference in power between opponents. It's why Kensei didn't use his against Wonderweiss after Mashiro got spanked.

I do not remember that.. but still. Even if the masks aren't going to stay for long periods, why not activate it right as you're about to start attacking. Even if they don't last for the full duration of the fight, you can get some more powerful hits in. Or, in someone like Rose's case, why not activate it right as he's about to use his final move?

I'm not. I just don't like how he has a badass moment killing the little dude so coldly, then we get a menacing looking bankai, then he gets taken out immediately. These captains have been around for a long time they should be a hellva lot stronger than that. Same goes for Kensei. I was hoping for more out of his bankai.

is there a better way to show off bankai's and explain how they work to the reader? especially when the audience is aimed at teenagers. or rather, used to be aimed at teenagers. this shit came out what... 6 or 7 years ago? also, any shinigami can just be thrown into the jacuzzi of healing and be good to go so all these deaths or critical wounds don't phase me at all. "oh. he has a star-shaped hole in his chest. whatever...." is how I feel.

I'm not in favor of the way kubo makes everyone explain EXACTLY what their super secret mega powerful ultra move does. it's dumb and insulting but what can ya do.

Show off the bankai, use ability. Determine what the ability is by seeing what the ability does. Not hard for 99.99% of manga characters.

Bust out a data book for those that like to argue about these things.

I think if Kubo didn't have people explain what their Bankai/abilities do, there would honestly be more complaining. Especially when the character hasn't been in the manga much or is a popular character. No one really cares when fodder characters and less popular "explain" their bankai/abilities at all. Imagine if Rose did his Bankai and did not explain it, there would be a couple of people on various forums going "lol wtf" or "wtf just happened?" and very few people going "wow that was awesome." Despite people complaining that fighters seemingly have all of this time to explain their shit mid battle, the reader still wants to know what's going on or why.

Kenpachi is an obvious directly opposing idea to this, as he can just about do anything he fucking wants and be awesome, "explained" or not.

You can honestly say that you could have understood that Kira was tricking your senses into believing you were drowning in water or being set on fire by manipulating your hearing synapses without any dialogue? All this caused by a troupe of marching & dancing mummy-like minions. Come on now, lol.
