So his bankai is:
Spoiler: show
Yes, Yamamoto and his VC are just sleeping along with the red-shirt shinigami introduced at the beginning.
Picture this:Imagine if Rose did his Bankai and did not explain it, there would be a couple of people on various forums going "lol wtf" or "wtf just happened?" and very few people going "wow that was awesome."
Rose uses Bankai, all those panels are the same, and then suddenly, from a distance, Hisagi is still conscious and watching. "I don't get it... is this some sort of illusion? I see nothing but that Quincy is definitely being attacked..." He watches over a panel or two... then interlaced with Quincy-dude getting hurt - "... I get it... Captain Oto's bankai is sound-based... it only hurts you if you can hear it..." Then the Quincy guy crushes his eardrums, things continue as they were. Not very difficult to do at all.
The other thing I wanted to add: If his bankai is definitely based on sound/music, then it wouldn't have mattered if Superstar crushed his eardrums or not, because the vibrations would have resonated through his skull if they were intense enough. GG, Kubo.
No, because the illusions are based on his opponents' perception of the music, not the vibrations of the music. If you can't perceive the music, your brain isn't fooled, so you don't take damage.
Also, your scenario doesn't make any sense; there's absolutely zero way of Hisagi deducing that as an outside observer. If he can't see the illusion due to not hearing it, he has no way of even knowing that there's an illusion. Damage appearing without seeing the cause is literally the opposite of an illusion, and he'd be much more likely to some to a wrong conclusion, like an invisible assault.
I think he's talking about bone conduction. Not sure though.
Sorry. I agree that it's stupid how he explained it, but it's almost a necessary evil.
Unohana shows how much fans hate when bankais are just left unexplained completely, so Kubo was in a bit of a fix when it comes to showing how Kinshara Botoudan worked; there wasn't anyone watching familiar with the bankai to explain it to themselves, Mask hasn't been shown to be smart enough to figure out such a non-straightforward effect (music that creates illusions that cause damage because your brain thinks they will cause damage?), and he's never used a narrator outside of introducing flashbacks and for name tags of new characters.
Just because he hasn't done it before doesn't mean it wasn't a problem back then as well. It has been a flaw the whole series that the characters have explained their Bankais/abilities (or an enemy has pointed out things for the reader).
The guy is using a baton, with a bunch of dancing creatures and his attack names resemble orchestral music pieces...I can safely deduce he uses sound in some way.
I hope the wrassler has something other than a star beam and the crowd hype. I am assuming he does because it would be an otherwise boring entrance for Renji, but where can he go without it being more ridiculous?
Well, he still has his transformation (what are the Quincy transformations called again?), and Renji has Bankai, so it's not over yet.
Edit: had a thought, so went back and checked -- this guy is the one who prevented Renji from using his Bankai when Byakuya got beaten:

so pondering the life that is Kubo makes me wonder about the hollow masks, when they went to huco mundo (or how ever its spelt) the chief asshole in charge absorbed everything he could to make himself Chimera mode, yet the army of 26 can't use hollowfied bankai's, wouldn't the hollow mask be made up of the same particles huco mundo is made up of? if there different (likely are and i'm to tired to research) then yeah i 'm on the same "why don't you bankai hollowfiy and own some bitches)
A wizard did it.
Well, he absorbed things that were made of Reishi, and Reishi makes up both Hollows and Shinigami, so if any Quincy used that ability, all Shinigami would be susceptible regardless.
Spoiler: show
JP Scans. Renji seems bout dat life.
As a side note, JUST fucking realized that since the beginning of the manga, Renji has never cut his hair lol
