And that shit's cold.
goddamnit
The true beauty of Kubo's plot-kai is that he's managed to make us all lose sight of the fact Shinigami are all already dead, yet Rukia can coherently talk about functioning while dead.
(On top of all the other ridiculous stuff like Ukitate having dead tuberculosis lulz)
It's only ridiculous if you are still fixated on a spirit based afterlife like Judaism or Christianity.
The afterlife in Bleach is just another phase of life, with people that breath, eat, drink, get sick, and die. Just because most people get there by dying in the real world (which I admit is confusingly titled "The World of the Living", doesn't mean that they're spirits or anything of the sort. People in the Soul Society function exactly like living people, except that they're made of Reishi instead of normal atoms and molecules, they are more resistant to death and live longer, and are invisible to people without powers.
Look at the Egyptian afterlife as a closer example; they believed that you needed all of your earthly organs in order to survive in their afterlife, which is why they mummified important people.
I was thinking this, but you did a much better job of explaining it than I could think of.
Obviously people can still die when they're in Soul Society, hence the whole Aizen/Rukia Execution arc. It's just another part of life so Rukia can certainly be closer to death/dead even though she is a Shinigami.
Also, blood is nothing new to the series. Why is everyone freaking out over frozen blood?
I actually agree with that Fwahm.
Oh Jesus, I was just making commentary to put perspective into the hairs we're splitting with regards to a mangaka who doesn't really use the finest of brushstrokes. I guess I should have just posted "THE HEART" or "WHO SAID THE ESPADA WENT FROM 1-10?" to make the point clearer.
this is why i think you're terrible
Not about the blood, more that she is talking about being dead in the literal, organic sense to be able to ignore fear, when they're all already dead, in the literal/organic sense. I guess to completely ignore fear, you can't just be dead, you have to be double-dead.
The whole living vs dead/spirit/whatever in bleach has never been well defined thou. I mean does ichigo basically have two lives if he fights using his physical body first?
He cant shinigami in physical form though (everybody else is ok moving with their bodies everywhere though... using the converter thingie plotdevice)
Well yeah, but he should be able to use hollow/quincy stuff in human form right?
Ishida would be a better example, wouldn't he be at 100% power both alive and 'dead'?
.. what? Quincies aren't dead, they're humans.
Given the Bach story, they probably don't cross over. Instead, they just go back to him and get all omnommed into his "Ich bin die Deutsch Borg, ja!" mechanic.
There's also the contradiction of memory retention. Prior to parrot kid, we were led to believe people lost their memories when crossing over and they even played on this some with one of the movies. Yet, now we also have the Fullbringers getting trained on the side, which would suggest they also recall things. I could see spiritual awareness being tied to retention, as all could see hollows and such, but it's just something we've never really seen elaborated akin to the whole death tiering thing.
Ichigo should just let all of his friends die. Odds are they'd get more powerful in soul society anyway. It's not like they wouldn't the able to visit their families or go to school after death.
He'd do them a favor since most of them are useless as is.
So not looking forward to the return of Orihime.
