Well, she was on the run from Soifon for a while. Granted, she was really rusty, and had Shunko up her sleeve, but it was something. Also, she damaged herself on Yammy's Hierro (which is kind of weird).

We're not sure if either is the case. So far it's only been mentioned that they "return" to him when they die. Either is certainly possible; we've yet to see.
