These Quincy opponents are just flat out awful. Espada they are not! Kinda sucks we never got to see Unohana legit go against an antagonist.
Yup, can't see how that seems unbelievable lol. Nearly every captain had some kind of fear of her, and you can when they dabbed on her past she was absolutely vicious. We never really got to see her go crazy cause they off-screened most of her fight with Zaraki, but she did kick Zaraki's ass regularly for a few pages, and its clearly alluded to that shes pretty crazy strong.
I want a turn the pendulum back style arc on Yama and Unohana wrecking shit back in the day like juha bach mentioned.
Kenpachi is just a title that only Squad 11 cares about these days. Kenpachi was a weak bugger in the Soul Society arc (compared to the top tiers), despite his title; Shikai Ichigo tied with him (albeit one with more cooperation than usual from Zangetsu), and Byakuya was stated to have more spiritual pressure than him in the SS arc. With all his subconscious limiters on, there were a multitude of Soul Reapers stronger than him (including in brute strength) who only didn't have the title because they didn't care about it.
He's certainly up there with the best now, but that's a recent thing.
Can people quote this "Kenpachi matching his opponents" power level deal? I don't remember it ever in the manga yet it's brought up constantly.
Long before the series started, Zaraki Kenpachi (then nameless), as a child, fought and defeated the bloodthirsty Yachiru Kenpachi, aka Unohana. When not even the first Kenpachi, known for being ridiculously powerful, could defeat Zaraki, he unconsciously gave himself a severe mental limiter on his strength, so that he can still enjoy battle. Part of this limiter was blocking out his Zanpaktou's voice, so that he could not hear it even if he wished to.
At the start of the series, Kenpachi had the full effect of this enormous subconscious limiter on his power, which weakened him greatly. Every time Kenpachi is brought to a near death state, a small portion of the limiter was raised, giving him an instant powerup. This is accompanied by him losing consciousness for a very short time.
Ichigo fought and tied with Kenpachi with the full limiter on. After that battle, the wounds Ichigo gave him removed some of the limiter, making him strong enough to manhandle Komamura and Tousen later in that arc.
In the middle of the fight against Nnoitra, Kenpachi had another portion of his limiters removed by the wounds Nnoitra gave him. IIRC, it happened when Kenpachi was taking a dirt nap before he got back up and cut off Nnoitra's arm for the first time. This, in combination with him using two hands, allowed him to kill Nnoitra.
In this arc, Unohana fought Kenpachi, and repeatedly brought him to near death, and then healed him. She repeated this numerous times until the limiter was no more, releasing his full powers.
The "Kenpachi matching his opponents' power levels" thing comes from the official novel, written by Ryohgo Narita. In the novel, this power of Kenpachi's was supposed to be his Shikai's ability, which not even he apparently knew about. This novel was written without Kubo's oversight, contains several inconsistencies with the manga, and has plot oddities that make even the manga's "twists" look normal. It's almost certainly noncanon.
I'm pretty glad the novel seems to be noncanon; it's got insane things like:
The previous Kenpachi showing up (who is a Transcendental).
Zaraki also becoming Trancendental because of his Shikai and oneshotting said previous Kenpachi.
Another previous Kenpachi being able to do 100 90+ hado at once because of their Shikai (which didn't work on Kenpachi because his Shikai can apparently also nullify everything that isn't physical combat).
The reveal that Szayel was the original 0th Espada until he split into two halves in a failed experiment, one being himself as the 8th Espada, and the other being his "brother" (the one that Renji killed). His original strength was in a clone of his original self that he had.
The hollow nurse character that showed up in like 3 panels that was killed by Yammy actually survived and can imitate any power she sees a recording of (including Mugetsu, which she killed the super Szayel clone with).
It was dumb, even by Bleach's standards.
Or, you know.. you could have just linked this page..
Spoiler: show
It has always been obvious that limiting his own power was Zaraki's trademark. The eyepatch, bells in his hair, and blunt/damaged appearance of his zanpakuto were enough to lower his own strength and give his opponents an edge, so that he could draw out and enjoy the fight even more. He may have been subconsciously limiting himself, but he was willingly doing it too.
true on that. the bells was so that people could hear him, eye patch to eat some of his spiritual powahs. then the page that serra posted sums it all up quite nicely. ol fhm dude really needs to stop talking about non-canon shit.
The only noncanon stuff I talked about was the novel stuff, which I mentioned was likely noncanon. Everything else is true.

Kubos getting pretty good at trolling, some people actually believed the Zero squad would die that easily lol
But where the hell is Waterboy?
This is all so fucking boring though. We all know how this works, yet we're all here watching how it ends. At this point we're just running those last 500 feet of the marathon after losing a shoe 1 mile into the fucking race.
All these Zero guys will die or on the brink of death after fighting the quincy lackey and getting curbed by the Boss mob. Then ichigo and friends come in and put in the final hits on the lackeys while getting wounded and probably swiped to the side by Boss mob. Ichigo and Boss mob fight, all seems lost kind of situations, ???, ichigo wins. New Arc.
I really hope bald monk guy and afrojack are badasses.
It's fairly obvious that the cloth trap is basically Doflamingo with his clones and shit
Don't forget Aizen's on the loose!
