I'm confused about his blade. He said it's the perfect blade, and he also said it's something every smith would be ashamed of, and a failed blade.

So is his blade so sharp (like, a single atom edge sharp) that he can't make a sheathe for it? Is that why it's a failure because the sharpness makes it extremely brittle?

Brittle? I don't think so. I think he's just saying that one of the basic requirements for a sword is that you be able to sheathe it.
Since its so sharp that he can't craft one for it, the sword is a failure.

It's a failure because it can't be contained and has no place being worn at the side.
