ukitake is soul king, duh
Interesting chapter. Hopefully Mangastream's translation offers a bit more insight into Ukitake's ability.
Kyoraku better be going to Central 46 about this:

MangaStream version didn't make it much more clear, but they did make it sound like Yhwach was intentionally allowed entrace to the Soul Palace.
How did "he whom shalt be named" get cut in the back now?
What the hell happened in this chapter.
No idea what Kyoraku is talking about.
How did Bach shoot himself with arrows.. and why did that save him from paint-dude's giant hand technique?
Mangastream translation is very interesting. Like Obsidian said, seems to insinuate Yhwach was allowed to enter the Soul Palace on purpose in order to allow the Soul Society some relief.
The arrow clearly applied a force stronger than the giant hand.
That said, I think a better question is how do we ignore the fact that he was dragged back up by an arrow stuck through his chest.. and the fact that his momentum went in the complete opposite direction..
Spoiler: show
Ya I saw that. But how did he shoot himself >.>. And how is being shot through the chest not a killing blow.
Because his letter is "A" for the "Anticlimactic". He has the ability to make every Bleach event feel meaningless and repetitive and his Leitz Stil can instantly dissolve any tension built up over the course of an arc.
You can tell, because he's been with Ichigo since Day 1 as Zangetsu.
edit: Also, interesting theory I just came up with. Ukitake and Shunsui were both pretty apathetic about the destruction around them. Shunsui is clearly going to see Aizen right now. Urahara/Yoruichi/Ichigo are on their way to the palace and it seems apparent that Shunsui allowed the SR to enter.
So, back in the day Shunsui and Ukitake defied Yamamoto to stop the Soukyokou, save Rukia, and then keep an eye on Ichigo using the badge.
What if they actually want the SK to die so that *Ichigo* can be made the new king (and Orihimme his queen, maybe)? What if they know that Bach is probably going to defeat the Royal Guard, and that Ichigo will need close friends and allies to protect the Royal Realm once the RG are gone?
Maybe that's what the FBs are training for, and maybe Uryuu is in on it. Have a Quincy, Shinigami/Hybrid or two, Fullbringers, and two high-ranking shinigami (Yoruichi/Urahara) up there to protect against any further threats?
You should take over writing for Kubo
I think they're indifferent to the destruction because they're technically in that bizarre-o version of the Seireitei the Sternritters created when they fucked with the barrier?
Anyone else immediately think of Kung Fu Hustle when Monk guy used his hand technique?
It's an interesting theory when you also remember the one chapter in which Shunsui pretty much told Ichigo's friends they were never going to see him again. We also know there's "something" malicious about the Spirit King according to Aizen's final comments and Urahara's reaction to it.
That actually isn't what he said at all.
He never said anything about Ichigo having too much power and that's why he couldn't stay.
