A tool is a tool. Why is it important to know how many tools he's had? If its not something important, like Nemu being an artificial approximation of someone who previously lived or something, then why is that information pertinent?

I'm speaking as Mayuri would. If Kubo was trying to elicit some sort of positive, impressed response from his readers, that was a pathetic, limp-wristed attempt. I'll be "impressed" when I know more useful thing about her and her creation, not simply that a mad doctor has made bunches of her, which is something that most anyone could easily imagine Mayuri doing anyway.

The man loves research and mutilating things. Why the hell WOULDN'T he make a bunch of his lab grunt assistants to cut, slice and carve up as he sees fit?

It's important because we're seeing Mayuri finally consider a creation to not be expendible, and it shows how many he has gone through before this without caring.

I'll reserve that kind of sentimental thinking for when he's not within the throngs of battle against a tough opponent and may need to order her to sacrifice her life at a time when he truly considers it necessary.

That's what this all means to me; the dude's a control freak. Sure, he may have some sort of personal growth arc where he learns the value of things around him not simply in "scientific tools to be used" terms, but that'll be an easier pill to swallow when he's not currently both fighting for his life and fighting to salvage as much of the enemy as he can for later research.

He learned this chapter that Nemu has been learning without him, and he later said that he believed that he wouldn't be able to recreate her as she is if she was killed. Alongside him not wanting her to put herself in danger, it shows that he is starting to see her as having value as more than just research (Mayuri expressed concern that he'd be unable to recreate her personality/self with another model; if he only cared about research, there'd be no reason to care about getting the same "Nemu" when he recreated her). It contrasts Nemu with her six predecessors.

It's not a "discovers the value of life", it's a "is starting to see a value in Nemu's life" (and that value is in terms of what she means to him personally, so it's still selfish anyway) in particular. It's very small, but it's something.

The differences in opinion could stem from the fact that the Mangapanda translation seems to indicate that Mayuri is starting to feel mushy towards Nemu, while Mangasteam appears to show slightly more of a control freak reaction. It's a subtle difference between the two confounded by the fact that Mayuri wouldn't ever willingly show his sentimental side.

Yeah I read mangasteam, in which he sounds very direct, controlling and sardonic, with a little dry wit.

I'm open to the other one though, so long as no one is seriously expecting an outward display of emotion. ESPECIALLY during a serious battle. I'm 100% open to him feeling a bit of pride that his creation is evolving, even if he's annoyed that she acted out of line.

I read the stream version and I got the same vibe that those who read the panda version are describing -- it's just that's how Mayuri expresses affection towards Nemu. That said, I don't think it's anything to care about and I don't think it elicited the reaction Kubo intended. Mayuri wasn't an interesting character because of his relationship with Nemu (or even his personality); he's interesting because his fights are always batshit insane.

I'm not saying he'd instantly have a new one, but in response to Guitarman saying Mayuri's bankai got blown up before showing us anything, we haven't necessarily seen the last of what it can do if the giant baby is still around.

I think I got what Kubo was going for. The way I read it, it looked as if for a moment in his own way he was expressing concern for Nemu, an actual concern, which until now has not been present as he usually sees her as a tool to dispose of as he sees fit. Made me feel like he's still the mad scientist but, and this is this arc entirely more or less, it shows he does have compassion or concern for his comrades, especially with how he saved Kenpachi and now this.

Also, the opening colored page. Whos talking? The wording makes it odd to see.
