So Kubo had Robert shoot Shunsui's eyeball just so he and his (long sword's) zanpaktou spirit would have matching eyepatches? That's a dumb retcon... which he forgot to draw that one time.

You're probably not far off. If this zanpakutou spirit is around that means he still hasn't used the powers of the smaller girl from the filler arc.

I've simply assumed the larger sword is the woman while the smaller is the girl. Looking back on the zanpakuto arc could offer some hints, though.

Is there any reason anyone would have a double zanpakutou without having dual-spirit origins (quincy/soul-reaper/hollow)? We saw a hole blasted through Ichigo (like we just saw here) before he went SSJ2.

Building even more upon this, aren't zanpakutou generated by the soul of the wielder? The implication then is that the swords reflect the parts of his soul that were the respective relationships he had with his wife and daughter from the world of the living. The games; the quarrels; his inability to commit seriously to either Lisa or Nanao -- as one of the oldest shinigami, it suggests he must have lost his wife and daughter in devastating manner long, long ago. That's why I don't think...

... dual-spirit origins (quincy/soul-reaper/hollow)...

... are necessary to explain Shunsui's predicament. If you want to consider it canon now, Ukitake also had "two" swords, and his zanpakutou's spirit was represented by twins in the filler arc; alternatively Renji had two spirits inhabiting his one sword.

To that end, other individuals who harness two kinds of spirit energy don't possess multifaceted weapons (Aizen, vizards, Uryu), nor do individuals with multifaceted weapons necessarily possess more than one type of spirit energy (Hisagi, Ikkaku, let's not even discuss Yachiru).

Ichigo's predicament is unique. As the series' #1 protagohero-guy and being human, soulreaper, quincy, fullbringer, hollow, and vizard (redundant?), his soul is not like any other character's .... except his sisters', who are worthless.

I don't think being part hollow really gets you a new spirit/sword, since every soul can manifest into a hollow. Becoming a hollow/vaizard just changes your power/soul type.

Ichigo's main sword is a hollow based manifestation, but that's just because that's his base soul power. His second sword is quincy.

So the only explanation for why someone would have two swords is two different spirit power sources (soul reaper and quincy).

Ukitake could have two because he had the Soul King's hand inside him.

Ichigo had mini-bach inside him.

Shunsui... I don't think it's any of these things. I'm hoping it's something more interesting. Like he split his soul like stark did, or a part of his soul split when he lost the woman he loved (or maybe his wife and daughter, hence older and younger blades).

Or just Kubo.

I'm assuming his zanpaktou's second spirit somehow someway has something to do with Nanao and her mother. Making Shunsui hesitant to use the second spirit of his zanpaktou altogether. I feel like this would have been less convoluted had it not been for the filler arc lol.
