Other then that, bottom of page 14, Urahra's Bankai being stretched to the limit before it collapses over him, stitching running all around his arms, on fingers, and extra on his face too. It's a pretty cool Bankai, wonder if he feels any pain while all that stitching is happening... wonder if the switches remain after or if he will be covered in scars.

This chapter served ZERO purpose.

It gave details on how Gerard's regeneration worked, revealed that Kenpachi didn't have a constant release shikai, showed that Kenpachi's shikai ability isn't the ability to cut anything (like a lot of people thought), removed Kenpachi's eyepatch, and had some fighting.

It's not exactly jam packed, but it's not nothing.

Um, that's exactly what his shikai is. The ability to cut through whatever he wants. It backfired at the end of the chapter, which means that Gerard's regeneration has to do with something stupid like "my schrift takes all the damage I receive and makes me stronger and bigger oh and if you hit my sword it takes the damage and reflects it on to you".

The problem is that was done before.

Kenpachi clashed with Gerard's sword too long before being thrown back, and Gerard was impressed that Kenpachi was able to damage his sword. His shikai does not have the ability to cut through anything. The only time Kenpachi referred to cutting through anything was in regard to himself, not his shikai, which means it could have easily been just a boast, which is what this chapter revealed it to have been.

I'll agree with Kuro that nothing really happened of substance, though.

If I had to guess, this fight will follow the theme of this arc of "vice captains deal the mortal blow that allows their captain to finish off the enemy". Rangiku will probably dynamic entry, let Gerard inhale her Haneko, and rip up his organs, letting the captains finish him off or some shit.
