It was originally supposed to end after the Rukia Rescue arc.
There's never been any evidence that it was ever supposed to end before the current arc. During the Arrancar arc, Kubo mentioned that he still had two more arcs after that one, a short one and then a very long one, and the main villain wasn't even close to being defeated at the end of the SS arc.
Bleach is still selling a million volumes a year or more, so I think it's unlikely that his editors are pushing him on this, and either Kubo always planned this, or he just got bored of writing Bleach or something.
Bleach was initially written with everything planned up to the end of the Soul Society Arc (Rescue Rukia). That's why the story is so focused and tight up to that point.
Once they got past that point Kubo had to start writing the story on the fly, and you could see drastic increases in story detours, 2-page splash images of someone being surprised with someone else trying to backstab them, and white backgrounds.
Didn't he say before this final arc started that he was always setting up the story and such while doing the arrancar arc?
He's said a lot of thing apparently. Just no one has any links to actual interviews so . . . lulz.
Even if he knew what he wanted the end to be there's still a definite difference in the quality of writing and the tightness of direction when you have a skeleton from point A to point B and when you are winging it. He probably created twists like "WHO SAID THE ESPADA WENT FROM 1-10" on the fly. Compare that to how well the Aizen reveal went.
Yea I gotta agree here. I'm pretty sure everything up to about half of the Arrancar arc (like, I think up to the point where he fights Grimmjow the second time but before the shinigami arrive) was planned and executed well.
Then after that you see a HUGE change in the narrative of the story, giant inconsistencies with Aizen and his motivations, characters serving no purpose after being hyped, characters serving every purpose after being ignored, and just flat out misusing every storytelling technique ever.
Like, there are flashes of greatness in between the dark tunnels and then a sign that says "Disney Land ahead" and you come out of a tunnel at Universal Studios.
Everything definitely fell apart during and after the FKT arc. The vizard did nothing. Ichigo's friends did nothing. He started pulling out stupid bankais for the sake of doing it, and then the Quincy arc started. Massive potential, great setup, but again with the THIS GUY WAS THE BEST RED SHIRT EVER and introducing new characters for no reason.
Fuck, he already did it here with Ichigo and Uryuu Sr. arriving. What the fuck are they going to contribute now?
This is like if Naruto randomly had the eight gates release and Sage Ten Tails mode happen and then in the next panel Sasuke just swallows everything into his eye and you're given a two page spread saying "The End".
Yup. After the Grimmjow fight there's a drastic difference in narrative.
After the Soul Society arc there was a drastic difference in the narrative.. Adding to the prior discussion, wasn't Gin supposed to be the original villain?
I still think Ichigo vs Byakuya was the best fight of all time.
Not really. The story was building quite nicely even after the SS arc. It was definitely after the final Grimmjoww fight where Kubo began to look lost and confused. All of a sudden the manga was all over the place with characters disappearing and battles being finished off panel.
This is a bit of a side-track, but does anyone else here play Bleach Brave Souls on mobile? I'm like 60 days in and I love it; the gameplay is pretty good for a mobile game. Although if you don't like gacha games, you probably will despise it, but they're pretty generous with free 5*s as far as it goes.
I thought about it, but wasn't sure about the gameplay.
I feel like it gives quite a bit more control than any other mobile game I've played; it's kind of like an action game with less overall actions you can perform. Dodging with flash steps is a big part of survival when it comes to harder stuff and there's also an auto-attack function that's very useful for farming.
At the end of this month is the start of being able to upgrade 5*s to 6* (6* increases stats and level cap) so it's not a bad time to hop on. They do one big double rate gacha (6% for 5*s) at the end of each month that contains 3 new chars (Gin, Bankai Soi Fon, and Shikai Shinji are the ones coming this month) and 6 older ones. There's also special gachas without rate up that occur right before that (this month are Zanpakutou rebellion chars Senbonzakura, Sode na Shirayuki, Tenken and Tobiume) and some filler gachas in between that usually aren't very desirable unless you're aiming for one specific character (but I still find those shitty since the normal rate is only 3% 5*.) The rates are definitely low (in comparison to FFRK), but as long as you utilize the 2x gachas, you'll do pretty well. You should try it out!
My 5*s look like this atm:
Spoiler: show
If you just start out, you can immediately get a free 5* Bankai Ichigo from this month's "frenzy" event, a free 5* Renji (who is god awful) once you fulfill some other conditions and a free 5* of your choice when you do the beginner orders from some older ones that include Aizen, Orihime, Chad, Uryuu, Byakuya and a different Bankai Ichigo. There's roughly one "frenzy" event every month or 2 where they give away a free 5*. Additionally, you can buy the "beginner's pack" that gives you a 5* that's already possible to go to the max level for $4, which is really worth it if you want to play the game even semi-seriously. I'd also advise rerolling until you hit a 5* within your first few pulls to get an even better start along with these things, but obviously that's not necessary (and if you do, keep going until you get 5* Syazel or 5* Grimmjow with the current available gacha although Nnoitora is kinda cool too.)
