I've always wondered the same thing myself, why hold back? Naruto follows the same exact mold the majority of its fights too. It really is starting to get annoying, DBZ ended how many years ago? The influence its had to date is ridiculous lol.

Devil's Advocate: They know a big brawl against the turncoat captains is coming, and they know they'll be useless in that fight if they go balls out and wear themselves out now. Similar to what happened with ichigo, where he went all out against Grimmjow and then Nnoitra showed.
Personal: That means crap if you get chopped in half cause the other guy was trying and you weren't. It's a dumb attempt to build up more drama and drag the fights out.
I have played GGX and GGXX against a number of people, and nobody ever bothered trying to turtle. I imagine a halfway decent player could break a turtle strategy very easily with an air->ground combo, IAD or dash->throw. Now, if the turtle in question also knows what he's doing and actually fights back, I would hold that he's no longer turtling, but simply using a blocking-heavy strategy to force the opponent to use a predictable attack and punish them. But that's more of a punishment style than a turtle one.
The reason for the buildup is an even simpler one... It's a storytelling technique called rising arc. If everyone went all out instantly, it would make for very short, uninteresting fights.
Short uninteresting fight is still better than long uninteresting fight. Of course the build up is important, but right now, there is no impact to the fight, and we don't really give a shit who win or lose. But the worst part is that every freakin fight were played the same exactly.
Well there are exceptions. Shinji didn't hold back when he showed up to save Ichigo from Grimmy, and although the fight was short it was still important enough to be semi-interesting. As for the current fights, the individual outcomes might not matter much, (fraccion elephant wasn't gonna pose much danger to the captains even if morningstar guy lost) but I actually do want to see Soifon have a fight that isn't 2/3 flashback or in a filler arc.
You know what would suck is if momo defeats Aizen. She knows him the best so maybe she knows his weakness. It would be one of those wtf ._. kills.
I would really like to see some captains fighting captains soon. Gin is pretty cool at the start of the SS arc when he cuts the giant holding up the gate I thought he was gonna be the main captain ichigo would have to defeat.
That sword coming out of anywhere and stretching to unknown lengths is pretty badass and we still don't know his bankia.
Momo doesn't know Aizen best, she was nothing more than a puppet. I imagine any of Aizen's allies know him more than Momo ever did. Also, Aizen seems to be the type that doesn't let any of his secrets out to anyone.
Momo killing Aizen after he's been defeated would be awesome though. Like her being his last resort to staying alive and that not playing out as he had planned.
I would probably forgive kubo for letting momo live if she kills Aizen in the end, or at least is a big part of why he dies
Haven't we established that Momo needs to stay around to give Hitsugaya (who appears to be one of his favorite characters for some reason) someone to act nice to?
Well hitsugaya has someone else to act nice to, ever notice how close him and Rangiku are, not to mention the looks they gave each other before going onto their seperate fights.
Also, about the 123 espada... Commander taking on old guy makes me think old guy is #1, but then again, 2 captains for stark? It's a close call... Halbiel is definitely 3 though, unless they threw Hitsugaya into the fire.
well, are yamamoto and barrigan even going to fight? they might just stand there and watch.
as far as Halibel being #3 because she's fighting Hitsugya, remember almost all of his fights he gets his ass handed to him. plus he couldnt even beat Luppi who was #6. I see him getting help from Sio-fon and or wolf-face sooner or later.
We should be finding out what their numbers are soon, since they will be fighting anyways.
I'm pretty sure Stark is #1. If he was weak he wouldn't be so lazy.
Yamcha was an all around loser though. Stark is lazy as in the sense that he is totally confident. Yamcha is just lazy because he's fat and obviously weak.
Souj's post would have made so much more sense if the image had displayed before I clicked quote. Also, Stark isn't fat enough to fit that character archetype.
That's more due to the fact that Hitsugaya has known Rangiku since before entering the Academy. After all, she did tell him to enter for his grandmother's sake.
Also, I have to agree about the whole "not going all out" part. Once in a while, you need the segment from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana says "Fuck it," pulls out the gun and pops a cap in the swordsman that is showing off.
