Decent ep. I didn't even realize that was Tousen in the mask when I read this chapter in the manga since there were so few panels of him at the time. It also looks like they're using something similar to Tousen's Bankai to "infect" people with the uh...hollowfication drug or w/e they were experimenting with at the time. I'm not saying it really is his bankai, just something with a similar effect.

I think it was implied that Tousen already had his Bankai at this point and used it on the individuals who got slaughtered. You can't see, hear or sense anyone but who is holding onto Suzumushi ( I think that's the name of his zanpakto, been a while) so it would kind of explain the people just dropping.

Well, I'm not saying he doesn't have it at this point, it's just that no one there, let alone another captain, hears/sees him even use Bankai. I do not believe we've ever seen a case of someone using Bankai without calling their swords name/ability or even saying "Bankai" (not to mention the huge increase of spirit power that's supposed to come with it that no one around notices?).

I realize it's not much of a case against him using his Bankai there, but I guess it's just I don't like the idea of someone suddenly being able to whip out Bankai without all the pretexts we've been led to believe are necessary for use.

Yeah it is a possibility but I think that is the reason Ulq was left behind for Ichigo.

Aizen has a plan for Ichigo, just don't know what it is yet.

Unless its Aizen's shikai and Tousen's bankai together. Explains how high level soul reapers were taken out so easily

It's Tousen's bankai... don't read too far into it, honestly. Black appeared around everyone, Tousen mauled them, the darkness dissipated, matching up with his bankai. The anime is just extending what happened manga-wise and giving it color. Also between the guards moving to post, and the slaughter, there was plenty of time for him to say bankai if it was off-screen. Remember that a time later, Aizen, Gin, and Tousen were all promoted to Captain after this saga (purportedly due to them all having bankai most likely).

it was said in the anime,in the last ep or 2, probably the manga too, but I dont remember too specifically, that there were already more than a few shinigami at captain level.
and as far as not saying "bankai" to release it, it's not said anywhere the name is necessary for bankai. we only know that once they are able to ue bankai, they are able to release shikai without saying a name, but has anyone, except Renji the one time we learned that, used shikai without the name accompanied?

A little late on commending on last weeks episode, but did anyone else find the part with Yoruichi and Byakuya absolutely hilarious? Also something I noticed, that hairband that she stole from him, is that the same one she wears in future episodes?
