Chain being broken just means they can't come back to life. It's when the links to the chain reach an end and there is no chain left that the person begins to turn into a hollow. At least that's what I always though based on that episode with Orihime being knocked out of her body and having the chain still there and stuff.

well ya, chain being broken means they cant return to their bodies, but also means that in 72hrs (there abouts i think?) that said soul will turn into a hollow if they arnt sent to the soul society. also if you noticed the chain on the kid was really close to his chest, so thats what my understanding is.

contradicts the numerous random ghosts that harass ichigo early on who would presumably have been dead for some time but still aren't hollows.

perhaps reiatsu strength has something to do with how fast the chain decays? do they do a better job of explaining this phenomenon (spirits becoming hollows) in the manga? (I haven't read it)

From what i remember, the 72hr rule was only for ichigo when he was in that specially made hole that urahara made to help get his spirit power back. other than that no time has been specified.

I thought the "That hurts" stuff was him in reference to losing his family and his sister to the Hollow before being sent off. I don't have the episode in front of me at the moment, but I do believe he was crying before she sent him off and it didn't show Rangiku stabbing or even pressing the pommel to his forehead. Just cut to the sky and then the hell butterfly fluttering off.

Then again, could just be bad translation. DB's good, but they're not flawless.

i didnt think there was a set rule for him when that happend, thought that was just a general thing that applied to everyone :S reason for that was since no time was specified for anyone else, and you see ichigo go from chained soul > soul reaper in a suggested normal timeframe for the transition, i just kinda guesstimated it.

Bleach7 allow you to do that I think (you need to register first). You need to download the recent chapter 1 by 1 tho.
