true . one shouldnt bother overthinking it but the lack of technology is kinda accurate considering that it's hard for your parents to understand a computer, can you imagine how difficult it would be for some guy 800 years old to grasp modern technology? They train to be able to use their bankai, but it doesn't seem to me that they get to choose its form.

Soi Fon shouldnt even have one. Back when ichigo was fighting byakuya, byakuya did a little sililoqui stating that only members of the 4 noble families can have bankai and she's not a member iirc.

Byakuya said that among those families, one who is able to achieve bankai is born once in several generations. He technically didn't say anything about people not in those families, if im not mistaken.

If I remember correctly the only way you can be admitted into Captain status is if you have a bankai. There would have to be either a lot of inbreeding for the 12 Captains to be put in place.

Yea the requirements for Captain are achieving bankai or defeating the current squad captain in a one on one fight like Kenpachi did.

There are three different ways, actually.

There are three different ways to become a Gotei 13 captain:

1. Captain proficiency test (隊首, taishu): A test which requires the ability to perform Bankai. Presumably, most shinigami become captains using this method. At least three existing captains, including the Commander-General, have to witness the test.
2. Personal Recommendation: To have personal recommendations from at least six captains and approval from at least three of the remaining seven.
3. Trial by Combat: To defeat a captain one-on-one with at least 200 witnesses from the captain's division. Kenpachi Zaraki is the only known current captain to have achieved his rank using this method. This method is seen as being the exceedingly rarer of the three as well as the least refined. The method is commonly looked down upon by some captains as barbaric compared to the other refined methods. This method also allows one to bypass having the mastery of bankai or other possible abilities that a captain would otherwise be required to have knowledge of, as it allows no judgement from captains who would require those skills as a prerequisite to join their ranks.

and as said, shinigami have no control over their swords form. Kubo hasnt said how a spirit is designated to a person, and I doubt he will, but more than 1 shinigami dislike their sword for various reasons.

Funny thing is when you look at the manga from the beginning to its current state you can see how much Kubo made up as he went along. He went from calling the Arrancar "Arrancar" to calling the top ten "Espada" and then stating they were numbered 1-10 to having Yammy state they go from 0-9... then he goes on to have Byakuya state that even within the noble families only one person within several generations can achieve it... but his grandfather achieved it, he achieved it, Ikkaku achieved it, Renji achieved it, Urahara achieved it, and Ichigo achieved it. Ikkaku and Renji are the only two to actually earn it. Oh, and then Ichigo magically gets slower and weaker than Espada who beat him down while Byakuya (the one that lost sight of him) is miles stronger than the Espada who's just one step lower than the one Ichigo is fighting.

Hitsugaya goes from remarking how he had trouble with Shawlong even in his Bankai while uncapped to being confident he's going to defeat Halibel and meanwhile Soifon magically forgot she can at least use Shunko; Kira is an ex-member of Squad 4 because Kubo forgot to bring healers, aaaaaaaaaaaaaand Yamamoto has succeeded in effortlessly killing 4 arrancar when he could just singlehandedly kill just about any of the remaining ones while maintaining the fire shield.

What's keeping Tousen from using his Bankai or Gin from shooting Shinsou out? Plotkai!
