and i came to the same conclusion about 60 pages later lol. Pretty much one of the worst kept secrets of bleach.

Wouldn't make sense, as none of the vizard recognized his spirit energy when Shinji confronted Ichigo. Shinji would have known it, and considering Urahara is familiar with Isshin and the vizard, they would all know whether Isshin was an 11th division captain or not.
There's something else to Isshin. Hopefully Kubo doesn't go the easy route and plotkai a "Yea he was 11th division 1000 years ago".
He could be the still current captain of the royal guard for all we know. We don't really have any idea how that crew operates. Would be kind of strange for him not to be actively protecting the king, but you never know. The royal guard is supposedly the strongest unit, and it would make sense seeing as ichigo is the strongest character.
It seems like the 11th Division Captain doesn't really have a good thought process and all he thinks about is the next battle. Doesn't seem to fit Isshin personality well.
Was there a previous Captain Commander before Yamato? Were Shunsui/Ukitake/Unohona always under Yamato's wing from the beginning of SS?
Only a few possibilities could play out.
If Yama wasn't the first Captain Commander, Isshin could of been?
If Shunsui/Ukitake/Unohona weren't with Yama since he became Captain Commander, Isshin could of been a Captain then. And if that is the case he could of either been moved to the Zero Division before Shunsui/Ukitake/Unohona were put into place. Byakuya Dad, or is it Grandpa?, is also somewhat interesting seeing how he seems to be older than all the rest and would in turn be a Captain for much longer, possibly knowing Isshin.
I would laugh if Isshin and Byakuya's Dad, or Grandpa?, are friends together in the Zero Division.
Yama even inquires by saying Kurosaki Ichigo eh? He has to know something about the Kurosaki family.
Yama founded the soul society iirc.
Yahr you do me matey.
It is just so blurred how Isshin could be involved with the Academy now. Even though he could of been in the Academy before Uki/Shun/Unohona were admitted.General Yamamoto founded the Shinigami Academy about 2000 years before the main Bleach storyline. Yamamoto was himself a teacher at this academy, and personally instructed Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake. He admits to being rather proud of the two. When they became captains, he boasted about them as though they were his own sons.
Unless they play off of how Ukitake and Shunsui basically helped Ichigo get Rukia out of there. I don't think Unohona has any face time with Ichigo besides the Rukia execution? Shunsui was pleased to find out it was the outsider and Ukitake was already preparing to stop the execution. Also, Unohona's expression is interesting but I doubt she could decipher that Ichigo was Isshin's son if she even knew the guy.
Well nvm, Shunsui and Ukitake were the first Captains of SS besides Yamamoto.
Haha looking too much into this shit is fun.
So wait, I forgot but how did Ichigo forget his dad is a shinigami or does he know? I feel like that never went anywhere and I'm assuming it's because he forgot somehow?
There is also the possibility that Isshin was a captain while Shunsui and Ukitake were and they just have never mentioned it to Ichigo. Shunsui at least seems to have a very amused attitude towards Ichigo.
Iirc the only person who saw shinigami-Isshin in the real world was Urahara.
Urahara, Kon, Ryuken(Ishida's Dad), and Yoruichi are the only people in the real world who I think know he is there.
They still can go back on the whole Quincy vs Shinigami war to explain Isshin if they wanted to.
And yeah Shunsui always seems weird around Ichigo which could lead to an opening about the story.
They still can go back on the whole Quincy vs Shinigami war to explain Isshin if they wanted to. If he was around then, not sure though.
Also they could do the whole Noble Family story to explain Ichigo and I noticed that Tatsuki, Ichigo's and Orihime's friend who could always see them fighting Hollows, looks like the chick with one arm and huge tits that shot them into Soul Society. Would be interesting if she got into the mix later on in the story?
Isshin states that "we" never found their base of operations or uncovered their goals. I doubt he is talking about Urahra/Yoruichi unless they Vaizards abandoned them as soon as they had the power.
One could only hope we'll ever hear of Tatsuki again.
edit: Some rewrites of the spoilers (they were apparently mistranslated):

Aaah vaizards. This is why i like you. No long speeches, no bullshit, just get it done.
Can anyone honestly say..
Spoiler: show
Yama started the gotei 13with Shinsui and Ukitake being among the first division captains way back when. So noone recognizing his spiritual energy is retarded, someone there should have as they were captains so long ago.
At this point it would make the most sense if Isshin had something to do with the royal guard, but so far it seems most of those people were once members of SS and were promoted to that position, so unless he was promoted pre-vaizards being captains long as hell ago, he'd either have to have been there before hand and/or gotten there a different way, OR MAYBE HES THE KING LOLZ.
Isshin is one of those, handful of characters, that no matter how it is explained it still wont make sense and wont follow the story properly.
PS... I have REALLY BIG HANDS that could hold lots of characters in them lol.
I think everyone is trying too hard to fit Isshin into some grand plan.
Why can't he be some shinigami that fell in love with a mortal woman and gave up his position in Soul Society to marry her and raise a family?
It doesn't have to be any more intricate than that.
Because this is Kubo we're talking about. There's going to be some failstory involved.
