I think it's because Zangetsu never actually left and because of his enormous spiritual power it's passively giving him the ability to use the shikai without his knowledge. Ichigo has always been known to be an idiot. It's all just an illusion in my opinion.

The fact that he's leaking spiritual energy ties in directly into why Zangetsu is perma-shikai.

1) He never received formal training to compress his sword. His dad even makes a quip about it fighting Grand Fisher, even though it wasn't directed at Ichigo at all-- the whole "training or you'll be swinging skyscraper swords" bit.

2) He simply has just that much spiritual energy, probably from being a human/shinigami hybrid (and now hollow too).

Regardless, him achieving Bankai solves the problem of him needing to compress his sword as that's what it does for him. From there plotkai allows him to be under Bankai seemingly forever, it seems (unless it's mercilessly beaten out of him).

Pretty much what Zilong said about the databook. I'm pretty sure Unohana has a maxed out attack rating, but that doesn't mean she could easily beat some of the higher-tiered people in Bleach.

Aizen pretty much auto-wins vs anyone without a second thought right now, but we know Kubo is going to pull some epic bullshit to make Yamamoto give him a run for his money.

In regard to the stupid filler I don't think this really works in the real Bleach canon. It honestly makes more sense that the manifestations are illusions/copies (possibly demons?) created by Muramasa from the person's subconscious and not being able to use the swords properly is a curse.

I'm pretty sure though it's just bad story telling and potentially could ruin the true explanation as to what zanpakutos really are. Being that Ichigo's Zangetsu is actually his inner hollow (his inner hollow actually says this saying whichever personality is strongest gets to manifest,) the apparent ability of shinigami to hollowify, and finally the fact that hollows can have there hollow form sealed into a sword makes it seem more likely that a zanpakuto could possibly be the hollow side of anyone's soul. Either way this filler arc doesn't completely ruin this theory but the whole Zangetsu manifesting without taking away Ichigo's inner hollow instantly sets off a billion alarm bells.

I agree with this. When Renji was finally able to release his Shikai I started thinking maybe they really weren't their Zanpaktou's and just clones or something Muramasa created and then somehow sealed everyone's ability to use their swords. We saw inside Ichigo that Muramasa was using some kind of illusion power to bind Shirosaki, so maybe he's using something similar to create the humanoid zanpaktou's.

Feels more like Muramasa created a personified id version of everyone's Zanpaktou while doing a weak Aizen-hypnosis version fueled by each person's weakness to nullify shikai/bankai forms.

I think those "stats" relate to pre-Aizen-treachery? I can't see any of the others being in the same ballpark as him, as everytime he is shown attacking or being attacked, he wins without any effort at all - see stopping Ichigo with one finger, stopping Tessai's kido while walking away etc etc.

The end of Starrk and Halibel is going to be disappointing, but I want to see what Gin and Tousen have up their sleeves, and hopefully more of Urahara and Ishinn.

It's possible Aizen may have just used an illusion in those cases but we don't really know the limits to his powers. I'm not even sure if he's actually a shinigami to be honest.
