And then he explained that her power is like his and that she shouldn't have needed to find a piece. So I think it was more a her not understanding her power than being limited kinda thing.

1) isn't enough to be a Captain it's simply the fact that Bankai is so rare and powerful almost everyone who has one becomes a Captain and everyone who is a Captain has one.

3) is supposed to be passing the Captain exam which requires a recommendation then an examination by three Captains plus Yamamoto. This is how Urahara became a Captain.

Sorry, you're right. You don't have to know Bankai, but all captains generally are required to know Bankai to be nominated.

1) Pass a captain's exam overseen by Yama and two other captains.

2) Referral by at least six captains, then approval from at least three of the remaining captains.

3) Defeat previous squad leader in battle, witnessed by at least 200 members of the squad.

It makes sense that all captains but Zaraki would know their Bankai, and even all previous captains.

1) Without a Bankai, even if you were crazy strong, Yama would probably stamp you with a big NO.

2) Even if you could get a few captains to vouch for you without a Bankai, I doubt you could get 9 out of 12 as the majority just seem way too arrogant/stuck up on tradition -- no Bankai, lulz back to the kids table with you.

3) People who have Bankai are crazy strong, so to beat them in combat, you must also be crazy strong meaning you would probably have a Bankai. Zaraki being ridiculously strong being the obvious exception.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but the title of Kenpachi, I thought, was simply a title for the strongest person in Soul Society. The leader of the 11th squad isn't necessarily that, it's just that this time around it happened to be that way. But then again, maybe I'm confused by which version of Kenpachi you're using -- we need a way to clarify if people are talking about Zaraki Kenpachi or just the title Kenpachi..
