They didn't wish him to be a genie per se, Aladdin tricked him by mentioning that Genie technically had more power than him, so he used his last wish to become a Genie, not realizing the implications meaning he'd need to have a lamp.

It was actually explained by Orihime's own Rikka
when they first appeared way back then, one of her flower things explained to her that they were born because of Ichigo
